Aromatherapy is both an art and a science, widely used by many, but never since the advent of modern medicines in the 20th century has it, or other holistic therapies, been accepted by many in the medical profession. The reason given being the lack of proof that it works. The lack of funds available to carry out clinical trials on the scale required will of course ensure proof will not be forthcoming. But does such scepticism really matter?
More and more aromatherapists are qualifying each year and they are treating a growing number of their clients for ailments ranging from skin complaints such as cellulite to eczema, sports injuries, stress etc etc. There are a growing number of colleges offering aromatherapy courses and these range from an introduction as part of a beauty course to a full 3 year degree covering detailed studies of 100 hundred or so essential oils, their chemical and biological make up and reactions with the human body. A survey in The Times revealed that 75% of people would like to see aromatherapy available on the NHS. The big question for the policy makers is how to integrate aromatherapy and conventional healthcare.
However the growth is happening at grass roots level in some hospitals where more and more nurses and midwives are becoming aromatherapists, using their own initiative. Also, many hospitals and other areas of care are encouraging aromatherapy treatments and a significant number are using essential oils in controlled research projects. Undoubtedly confidence is growing. What examples are there of Aromatherapy in the NHS?
For example, over 70% of cancer centres offer aromatherapy in palliative care for cancer patients using appropriate massage techniques. Hammersmith, Royal Marsden and Charing Cross are amongst them.
The Neil Cliffe Cancer Centre has a comprehensive aromatherapy support service in place using essential oils and offers aromatherapy education for home use to its patients.
The adult leukaemia unit at the Christie Hoispital, Manchester has two aromatherapists offering support to patients, predominantly to improve the quality of life in a highly stressful environment. There are increasing examples of an aromatherapist being employed by hospice trusts. At Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington, essential oils are used to promote improved quality of life and to provide help with such conditions as nausea, anxiety, depression, aching and stiff joints, as well as pain.
For a number of years now aromatherapy massage has been a key treatment strategy at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, in areas such as the management of chronic pain in sufferers of multiple sclerosis. Sufferers obtain symptomatic relief of pain and other benefits include improved sleep, relaxation, improved joint mobility and a sense of wellbeing.
Aromatherapy has been practised in the midwifery and obstetrics sector for a number of years, The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford has operated an aromatherapy service since 1990 and a survey of 8,000 patients over 8 years concluded that over 50% of women who used aromatherapy treatments during labour found it effective in the reduction of fear and anxiety.
Aromatherapy plays a role in many other environments. Working with the deaf and deaf-blind; with autism; attention deficit hyperactive disorder; and with addictions and allergies, and also with care of the elderly and mental health sufferers. How long have we known about the powers of Essential Oils?
The evidence is all around us, aromatherapy is working and there are thousands of individual case studies to prove it, with thousands of years of history behind it. The ancient Egyptians were using essential oils for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes hundreds of years before the birth of Christ., The ancient Greeks were fond of aromatic baths and they discovered the spiritual power of flowers and their ability to help sleep, relax, refresh and revitalise, The Romans and Chinese have used plant extracts to treat all sorts of ailments. More recently, in the 19th century, French soldiers injured in battle, were treated in their hospitals with essential oils. It is also well documented that during the time of diseases such as yellow fever the workers in the perfume area of Grasse, in southern France who harvested flowers such as Lavender remained immune to the diseases.
But it was not until the 1930s that the term was first used by the Frenchman Gattefosse. He accidentally discovered the healing power of Lavender. Having burnt his hand he plunged it into a nearby container, thinking it was water. It wasnt, it was Lavender and the burn healed quickly and without scarring. Since then many have promoted the use of Aromatherapy, but it is in the home, with use by trained therapists or anyone learning more about the essential oils and trying to experiment, that will see increased usage.
Perhaps some of the proprietary supermarket brands have gone over the top and do not do justice to the term aromatherapy in naming the shampoos and bubble baths as products, but there is nothing in law to stop them. Furthermore, I am not a great advocate of pure essential oils being freely available to anyone in a supermarket as they are potentially dangerous products if abused or even used incorrectly. How can I find out more about aromatherapy?
Lastly, for those of you wishing to learn more about aromatherapy and perhaps even get a qualification at varying levels there are colleges throughout the country running courses under the umbrella of bodies such as ITEC, VTCT, NVQ, BTEC etc as well as a number of correspondence courses.

Viagra is a medication used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Clinical studies shown that Viagra possesses a significant therapeutic effect in more than 88% of men with erectile dysfunction.
However, you should keep in mind that Viagra is not useful for everyone. Necessarily talk with your doctor if you are suffering from any cardiovascular diseases such as angina, hypotension, coronary heart disease, abnormal heart beat(arrhythmia). If you are taking Nitrate drugs during treatment you may experience a drop of blood pressure leading to life-threatening conditions.
Also let your health care provider know if you have liver disease, eye problems, anemia and leukemia, multiple myeloma and cavernosal fibrosis. You doctor should specify the right dosage for you relying on age, medical conditions and use of other medication. Usually the recommended dosage of Viagra is 50mg one hour prior to the sexual intercourse.
In people over 65 years of age the treatment with Viagra should be carried only under health care providers supervision. In elders the doctors prescribe the lowest dose of Viagra(25mg) to control erectile dysfunction. Monitoring of vital functions is required.
Viagra may cause a certain number of side effects. If you experience severe headache, urinary tract infections, vision problems, rash, stomach disorders, facial flushing seek medical attention immediately. Usually in appropriate use according the doctors instruction Viagra is well tolerated.

With the passing of Michael Jackson today, one of our generations biggest icons, my initial response was sad.
A few minutes later that had passed and I started to think about the child abuse allegations that he had been accused of in the last few years.
I loved Michael Jackson growing up. I think he had talent. I think he was an amazing dancer and entertainer and he took rock star to a new level. I still turn the radio up when I hear his songs. I am not questioning his talent nor his contributions to the entertainment industry, but as a mother his child abuse allegations are extremely disturbing to me.
Michael Jackson was a great singer and a pop icon- I liked his music and my family and I actually met him through a family friend in 1984.
However, I feel Michael Jackson (MJ) was a *serial* child molester / pedophile, or whatever term you want to use.
Non-molesters dont have young boys over to sleep in their beds then pay out millions to keep it quiet. Michael Jackson befriended young boys, sometimes from disadvantaged backgrounds, and then took them to his ranch, banning their parents.
This is a HUGE red flag. If MJ loved children so much, why didnt he befriend them at Disneyland? Take them to public places, have their parents along, or just even go hang out at these childrens homes?
Giving MJ the benefit of the doubt, and assuming he was victimized by these families out to destroy him and get money from him, which is what MJ claimed, he should have never had put himself in a situation like this again after the first allegation. But he did, and he chose to do this- still taking the boys to his private ranch.
It is interesting how so many other celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Madonna, Meg Ryan, Mia Farrow, etc., can have big hearts for children and work with them, and yet none of them have been claiming they have been falsely accused of molestation for money. No child can describe Brad Pitts genitalia like one of Michael Jacksons alleged abuser could. I dont consider Michael Jackson bigger than , and there have been no claims of inappropriate sleep overs from the Jolie-Pitt house. So I dont buy into the money claim.
The FACTS are MJ was arrested once and accused twice of child molestation. He settled out of court once, and found not guilty once. Both times the details have been sealed, and millions of dollars were paid out. If he had nothing to hide, why not let the facts get out there to clear his name? Celebrities get accused of false things all the time, but very few of them get arrested, and hide the details-twice.
The case would never have gone to trial without sufficient evidence in the 2005 case, where Michael and the boy were discovered sleeping in bed together. How many other celebrities are having sleep overs with minor children in their houses with doors locked, and parents banned?
How many just normal parents have sleepovers like this with their childrens friends? I can imagine the outrage if a Boy Scout leader was found sleeping in his tent with boy scouts on on an overnight camping trip. Parents and the public would be outraged-as we should be. But since this is MJ and he could do the moon-walk, these facts are pushed to the background-suddenly a 40 year old man who has 13 year old boys sleep with him in bed, doesnt matter.
I view this like OJ Simpson. He never got convicted and was found not guilty either of killing his wife and Ron Goldman, but he had a lot of money, and was able to create doubt. Even if he could run with a football. Are there any people out there ten plus years later that dont think OJ had something to do with the murders of his wife and her friend? Even though the jury said he didnt?
I dont care what talent in life you have- if you put yourself in compromising positions when you are under a spotlight, especially with minor children, you create suspicion on yourself. You have to be even more careful. If they ever release the evidence and the facts of the cases about these boys and Michel Jackson comes to light that he was completely innocent, I will be the first to apologize for doubting Mr. Jacksons innocence.
Michael Jacksons family has my sympathy- no family should have to lose a loved one, but I am more sorry for the families of MJs victims and the position these young boys were put in by an ADULT man who should have known better not to have young boys locked in his bedroom sleeping in the same bed with him. Some things in life, you just dont get to do- and this is one of them.
I dont care if you can throw a football, raise money for children in Africa, run with a football, dance, sing, or are the greatest entertainer in the world. Putting yourself in compromising positions over and over again with young children, that raises a question of inappropriate behavior with them is wrong. No matter who you are.
There is no free pass for taking advantage and molesting children. Dont take them in your bed to sleep with them. Dont lock the door to the bedroom, and dont ban the parents. Seems pretty simple to me. We all make mistakes, and no one is perfect. How could MJ NOT have known or had not been advised to do this- but he chose to do it anyway.
The world lost a great entertainer, but his victims have lost their innocence too. They will never get that back. Victimizing the most vulnerable in our society is unforgivable, and I for one, cant help but feel somewhat relieved that there is one less person putting innocent children in compromising situations.
