Aromatherapy is both an art and a science, widely used by many, but never since the advent of modern medicines in the 20th century has it, or other holistic therapies, been accepted by many in the medical profession. The reason given being the lack of proof that it works. The lack of funds available to carry out clinical trials on the scale required will of course ensure proof will not be forthcoming. But does such scepticism really matter?
More and more aromatherapists are qualifying each year and they are treating a growing number of their clients for ailments ranging from skin complaints such as cellulite to eczema, sports injuries, stress etc etc. There are a growing number of colleges offering aromatherapy courses and these range from an introduction as part of a beauty course to a full 3 year degree covering detailed studies of 100 hundred or so essential oils, their chemical and biological make up and reactions with the human body. A survey in The Times revealed that 75% of people would like to see aromatherapy available on the NHS. The big question for the policy makers is how to integrate aromatherapy and conventional healthcare.
However the growth is happening at grass roots level in some hospitals where more and more nurses and midwives are becoming aromatherapists, using their own initiative. Also, many hospitals and other areas of care are encouraging aromatherapy treatments and a significant number are using essential oils in controlled research projects. Undoubtedly confidence is growing.What examples are there of Aromatherapy in the NHS?
For example, over 70% of cancer centres offer aromatherapy in palliative care for cancer patients using appropriate massage techniques. Hammersmith, Royal Marsden and Charing Cross are amongst them.
The Neil Cliffe Cancer Centre has a comprehensive aromatherapy support service in place using essential oils and offers aromatherapy education for home use to its patients.
The adult leukaemia unit at the Christie Hoispital, Manchester has two aromatherapists offering support to patients, predominantly to improve the quality of life in a highly stressful environment. There are increasing examples of an aromatherapist being employed by hospice trusts. At Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington, essential oils are used to promote improved quality of life and to provide help with such conditions as nausea, anxiety, depression, aching and stiff joints, as well as pain.
For a number of years now aromatherapy massage has been a key treatment strategy at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, in areas such as the management of chronic pain in sufferers of multiple sclerosis. Sufferers obtain symptomatic relief of pain and other benefits include improved sleep, relaxation, improved joint mobility and a sense of wellbeing.
Aromatherapy has been practised in the midwifery and obstetrics sector for a number of years, The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford has operated an aromatherapy service since 1990 and a survey of 8,000 patients over 8 years concluded that over 50% of women who used aromatherapy treatments during labour found it effective in the reduction of fear and anxiety.
Aromatherapy plays a role in many other environments. Working with the deaf and deaf-blind; with autism; attention deficit hyperactive disorder; and with addictions and allergies, and also with care of the elderly and mental health sufferers.How long have we known about the powers of Essential Oils?
The evidence is all around us, aromatherapy is working and there are thousands of individual case studies to prove it, with thousands of years of history behind it. The ancient Egyptians were using essential oils for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes hundreds of years before the birth of Christ., The ancient Greeks were fond of aromatic baths and they discovered the spiritual power of flowers and their ability to help sleep, relax, refresh and revitalise, The Romans and Chinese have used plant extracts to treat all sorts of ailments. More recently, in the 19th century, French soldiers injured in battle, were treated in their hospitals with essential oils. It is also well documented that during the time of diseases such as yellow fever the workers in the perfume area of Grasse, in southern France who harvested flowers such as Lavender remained immune to the diseases.
But it was not until the 1930s that the term was first used by the Frenchman Gattefosse. He accidentally discovered the healing power of Lavender. Having burnt his hand he plunged it into a nearby container, thinking it was water. It wasnt, it was Lavender and the burn healed quickly and without scarring. Since then many have promoted the use of Aromatherapy, but it is in the home, with use by trained therapists or anyone learning more about the essential oils and trying to experiment, that will see increased usage.
Perhaps some of the proprietary supermarket brands have gone over the top and do not do justice to the term aromatherapy in naming the shampoos and bubble baths as products, but there is nothing in law to stop them. Furthermore, I am not a great advocate of pure essential oils being freely available to anyone in a supermarket as they are potentially dangerous products if abused or even used incorrectly.How can I find out more about aromatherapy?
Lastly, for those of you wishing to learn more about aromatherapy and perhaps even get a qualification at varying levels there are colleges throughout the country running courses under the umbrella of bodies such as ITEC, VTCT, NVQ, BTEC etc as well as a number of correspondence courses.

Here Are 4 Ways That Visualization May Be Able to Ease You Back into Control
Using visualizations to reduce pain may be unlike anything else you've tried. It not only gives you the chance to feel better, but does so in a way that may be able to relieve your sense of helplessness.
When you have back pain or pain in the neck or other extremities, arthritis pain, fibromyalgia pain, or neuropathic pain (nerve pain), it can seem like everything around you robs you of control:
The pain has a life and a schedule of its own. It comes and goes when it pleases, and you're almost powerless to affect it.
Your doctor and her staff have absolute control over your comfort yet they may seem indifferent to your urgency to get your Rx refilled.
Your pharmacist seems to think you're becoming an addict and sometimes embarrasses you in front of other patrons with condescending remarks.
Your family won't let you drive because your meds make you groggy.
Your spouse may not understand the level of pain you feel, and is angry at how much the pain prevents you from pulling your load in the relationship.
If any of these conces apply to you, take heart. Virtually everyone who's tried using visualization statements to program their subconscious has reported benefits that go beyond simple pain relief to include feeling more powerful. Even if the reduction in discomfort is minimal, they still feel like they're gaining back psychological control of their lives.
Programming the Subconscious
Visualization statements represent the specific language that your subconscious wants you to read back to it to help ease your pain. They're simple and are targeted directly at the main factors that could bring you relief.
You can obtain these statements by leaing how to communicate directly with your own subconscious mind. The process is straightforward and can be done at home by working with a facilitator over the telephone. You you need no special skills and no previous experience in working with the subconscious.
Here are some important ways in which visualization statements can help you reduce feelings of helplessness:
1. Talking Down the Pain
Visualizations allow you to directly address your pain. For example, depending on what your subconscious indicates, you may visualize things such as your muscles being relaxed and free of pain, or pain signals being weakened before they reach your brain.
You'll soon find that it can be exhilarating to make those statements. They're a declaration of your birthright to be free of pain. And they're a specific set of instructions to your subconscious to get busy and fix the problem.
Best of all they're proactive, taking you out of the passive stance that you have when you're feeling helpless. Instead of being at the effect of your pain, you can begin to feel like you're directly taking responsibility for relieving it.
2. Giving Yourself Your Own Natural Pain Meds
Most sets of pain relief visualization statements include highly detailed instructions from the subconscious on brain and body chemistry. For example, instead of relying solely on drugs to lower glutamate, substance P, and the other pain amplifiers, you're working to reduce your own supply naturally.
And instead of depending exclusively on an Rx to increase the action of endorphins or serotonin, you're directly instructing your subconscious to produce more on its own. Even if the reduction in pain is only slight, you may feel like you've gained a victory over doctors, nurses and pharmacists. You're seemingly dispensing your own pain meds without having to worry about refills or side effects.
3. Reasserting Yourself In the Family
If due to your condition you're not being given respect by your loved ones, visualizations can help you stand up for yourself.
Even if relief hasn't kicked in, and even if it does so with only slight benefit, the visualization process can have a healthy impact on your self-esteem. For example, negative emotions such as anger, confusion and shame can directly be addressed. You may find that they lessen in impact as the days go by.
And at the same time, positive emotions such as eageess, happiness and strength can be visualized. You may feel them grow in influence as time passes.
Even if your pain circumstances don't change much, your experience of them may shift as your emotions are worked on by the subconscious. This may give you more confidence when dealing with well-meaning but sometimes overbearing family members.
4. Cutting Helplessness Off At the Source
Ultimately visualizations help you deal with helplessness by giving you the very real experience of being the expert. You, not your doctor, pharmacist or family now have expertise regarding your own pain, because you've accessed your subconscious and found out what it thinks is needed to ease your pain.
The statements you derive from it and feed back to it will probably cover a wide range of body systems and functions--brain chemistry, body structure, the immune system, hormones, emotions, food, and sleep. The mix will be entirely unique to you, and will represent the opposite of helplessness--a powerful tool aimed at programming your subconscious to provide relief
Programming the Subconscious
The subconscious is quite powerful. When programmed through the very visualizations that it suggests, it may be able to tu episodes of uncontrolled pain and helplessness into events over which you have a degree of control.

More people seem to suffer with troublesome joints than just about anything else we see at Elixir, whether it is due to arthritis, wear and tear, sports injuries or a variety of other reasons. This is not something which is exclusive to old age, it can strike at just about any age. However, despite the many reasons behind the problematic joints, there is one remedy which seems to have the magical ability to sort most people out glucosamine.

How does it work?
Glucosamine is used by the joints to repair, strengthen and improve the integrity of the cartilage, in addition to creating more lubricating fluid in the joints. Over the years there have been numerous clinical trials which have shown glucosamines ability to relieve symptoms associated with arthritis as well as initiating joint repair, including reduction of pain and inflammation. Also, the compounds found in glucosamine are important in the repair of bone tissue, whether through fracture or age-related bone loss.

What else can be done?
All arthritic joints are low in sulphur, compared to healthy joints. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane, since you ask!) is the most concentrated source of sulphur compound available, and plays many roles in the bodys organs and systems. As sulphur is necessary for the production of new cells, it is essential for connective tissue repair, as well as making and maintaining hair, nails and skin. The anti-inflammatory action of MSM also help reduce pain in the joints.

Chondroitin is closely related to glucosamine, and the two are often seen together in the same supplement. Evidence suggests that chondroitin helps the cartilage to attract and hold onto fluids (which improves the shock-absorbing properties of cartilage, making it more ), and inhibits enzymes which damage joint tissue.

How do I take all that?
If that seems a lot to swallow, you may choose to take it all together in one supplement. The important thing to remember is that you must start off on a strong enough dosage to make a difference, and that means preferably 1500mg of glucosamine per day until you feel an improvement. You can then reduce the strength to 1000mg per day as a maintenance dosage. Bear in mind that any repair job is not going to be instant, so you may have to wait a month or two or even three before you see results! The good news is that it just keeps on improving once you have started taking it, as the repair gets stronger and stronger.

There are numerous brands on the market, and some of these are infinitely better than others. If you would like us to guide you through the maze of tablets, capsules, liquids and even vegetarian versions to ensure you get a good quality product which will give good results, please come and see us at Elixir or contact us at Elixirhealth.co.uk for orders or further information. We may not be able to get you running the London Marathon next year, but who knows theres always the Olympics in 2012.

Fractured neck of femur patients take up significant numbers of beds in hospitals in all the developed nations, as elderly people develop low bone density, especially women after the menopause. Less commonly stress fractures can occur in anyone who puts greatly increased stresses through their hips such as running athletes and soldiers who are in a much younger age group. Trauma such as a fall onto the side of the hip can cause this fracture in almost any age group as can pathological conditions in the area secondary to tumours.

Orthopaedic specialists have understood for a long time the necessity to realign the fracture fragments due to the anatomy of the circulation of the femoral head carrying the risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the area. Avascular necrosis occurs when death of the bony area follows the cutting off of the blood supply, allowing the bone to collapse under stress, making an operation necessary. Hip immobilisation in a plaster spica was the treatment until Smith-Petersen developed his system of fracture fixation in the nineteen thirties. Further development involved adding sliding compression forces in devices such as the Richards Screw Plate.

The neck of the femur is vulnerable to the stresses, both shearing and compressive, which occur in walking and in highly amplified levels in athletic events such as running, jumping and other high performance activities. Forces across the hip can reach five to six times the person's bodyweight in certain cases and these stresses can cause bony changes. Typical hip pain occurs in the hip, the groin and the front of the thigh and can be caused by many hip problems apart from stress fracture. Stress fractures can progress to a complete fracture with possible displacement and all the potential consequences.

If abnormally increased levels of stress are imposed on normal bone by a healthy individual the bony trabeculae which resist mechanical forces can fail and the result is a stress fracture. In older women after the menopause the bone is abnormal due to pathological insufficiency from metabolic conditions or osteoporosis and in this case normal mechanical stresses can be too much for the bony structures. Bone health and turnover are maintained by oestrogen levels and once the hormonal levels drop bone develops brittleness, both in female sportspeople who train very highly or in older females.

A femoral stress fracture should at least be suspected in an athlete who presents with hip pain after a significant increase in level of activity, with the typical picture worsened with activity and relieved by rest. As x-rays may not show anything in stress fractures bone scanning is used as a more sensitive measure. Much more common is an older person who jars themselves, twists on the hip or falls, resulting in a fracture of the femoral neck. Diagnostic indications are pain in the hip, groin or thigh, a shortened leg, lateral rotation of the leg and an inability to weight bear.

Transverse fractures of the femoral neck have approximately a 10-15 percent risk of displacement with its accompanying possibilities of avascular necrosis. These fractures need operative fixation and the question arises about the correct surgical management. Joint replacement or internal fixation is the choice and this depends on the anatomical placement of the fracture. If the fracture is sub-capital, directly under the head, then the blood supply is potentially affected especially if the fracture is displaced, making a Thompson hemi-arthroplasty or total hip replacement a better option.

If the fracture is not displaced and is under compression due to the nature of the injury then conservative management is indicated and surgery unnecessary. If the fracture is under tension it is unstable and has the potential to displace and requires internal fixation with one of the many fracture fixation devices. This applies to lower femoral neck fractures, trochanteric and sub-trochanteric fractures. Fractures are fixed as soon as possible after the injury, allowing for the medical condition of the patient.

Fracture fixation or replacement is followed by twenty four hours to rest and recover from the operation. On the next day a physiotherapist and an assistant will review the operation note, check the medical status of the patient and mobilise them into weight bearing with crutches or a frame.

He is already on a pill called Rimadyl and gets an adiquin injection bi-weekly. He never winces or whines, but I feel its progressing. The vet said its not his time to yet, but I want him to be as comfortable as possible. How come they havent prescribed a painkiller?
no, he hasnt had cortisone shots. Thx for all of the great answers! He is such a beautiful, sweet boyI really dont want to cheat him of any time b/c of lack of knowledge.

I have two natural/holistic recomendations for you. Both can be fed with your vets consent. One is Agility. Its for normal joint function and connective tissue. It contains Glusomine 500mg, Methylsulfonylmethan 500mg, which is MSM, Vit E 50mg, Vit C 50mg. Broswellia Serrata 50mg, Yucca Schidigera 50mg, Alfalfa leaf extract 50mg, Elcosapentaenoic EPA 6mg Docoosahexanoic DHA 4mg. Forgive me if spell some of these wrong the print is really little. I use this for my shep mix that has arthritus and it is doing wonders for him.
I also use Fish Oil. I use a human grade Fish Oil called Sealogix for me and I am thinking of putting my shep on this with the Agility. I know of several animals personally that have used this in conjunction with the Agility and it has amazing results. One dog had a hip replacment and was running around within 8 weeks of being on the Fish Oil with no other drugs. Fish Oil is a great natural pain killer because it is an anti-inflammatory. Fish Oil has so many great properties. Go to this website HolisticPetMenu.com and research these for yourself. Any questions contact me anytime.
Rimadyl is very hard on the liver. Before I went holistic I had one of my dogs on it and it caused him to have liver failure. Had my vet told me that Rimadyl was so hard on the liver I would have never gave it to my dog. This was 7 years ago that my little guy passed away from liver failure, not from arthritus.
EDIT.. There are no fillers in the Agility Product. Plus the Fish Oil is a 5 star rating by the International Fish Oil Standards. This is very important. The Fish Oil is contaminate free and natural.

A Chakra Perspective

An alignment point in the body that is able to receive, associate with and transmit the life force of energy is called a chakra. It is a word from Sanskrit which means the sphere of mans aural energy or a continually spinning wheel. Traditional Hindu text maintains that there are tens of thousands of chakra points in the human body. However, the most essential of these various chakras are the seven chakra points that run along the spinal column to the crown of the head.

The seven chakras are the root, navel and solar plexus chakras, the heart, throat, and brow and crown chakras. The receiving and transmitting of energy from the surroundings, the individuals involved and other essential surrounding elements involves these chakra points. The mystical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, corporeal and psychological issues of an individual are influenced by the activity of the chakras.

Whether you choose a viewpoint of the Hindus mystical understanding of an individual's internal and external experience, Chinese medicine or the explanation of modern psychology of human thought processes and consciousness, however the chakras are distinct yet they all have a common thread that runs with them all concerning their explanations or definitions.

Whether or not we are awake the chakras are in constant motion. This constant activity will influence the structure, appearance, physical disorders, glandular processes as well as our thoughts and deeds. However, if there is a chakra malfunction in one or more points that can be brought on by various reasons an imbalance will develop which will make itself known in other areas of our being.

This happens because all the seven major chakras correspond with the associated endocrine gland within our body. When there is any type of imbalance in the functioning of a chakra it influences our emotional and physical processes and then reveals a disorder in the normal pattern of behavior or activity by means of the endocrine gland it associates with.

Maintaining the Balance of Chakra Using the above as our point of beginning, we can assume safely that the majority of our ailments and illnesses are related to our chakras. Even though there may not be enough materialization of imbalance or illness, there may yet be concerns or emotions that come from our childhood that influence us spiritually, emotionally and physically.

Generally speaking, the repressed or elapsed emotional balance that comes from experiences of past trauma is one of the main causes of imbalance of the chakras. The cellular level of the body is influenced by the emotional toxins that are habitually buried inside the subconscious of anyone. This is the reason that we should deal with our emotional baggage as this will aid us in maintaining a good balance of the chakras which in turn influence the healing process of our physical being.

Healing the Body Chakras Activities such as Reiki, color therapy, aromatherapy provides balance by using the healing properties of crystals, gemstones and pendulums.

The physical and breathing exercises that are performed in yoga is beneficial in maintaining the balance of the charkas of the body, many individuals enjoy attending yoga exercise classes.

There are various methods of chakra healing. These include focusing the mind on awareness or thought or even an object for a particular amount of time, the use of CDs or audio tapes of a guided visualization that will enhance natural healing and relaxation techniques to reduce the influence of stress while channeling the power of the mind and relaxation.

The chakras work constantly to maintain the body, even though we cannot see or touch them.

In order for the chakras to be in balance the body must be fed properly and enjoy good health. Each of the seven major chakras has specific foods that aid in maintaining balance.

The root chakra takes nourishment from spices, protein rich food and root vegetables. Foods such as nuts, seeds, sweet fruits, cinnamon and vanilla nourish the sacral chakra. The solar plexus chakra that enhances out sense of personal self love and self confidence is nourished by consuming dairy products, pasta, breads, spicy mints and cereals.

The heart chakra takes nourishment from green leafy vegetables and green tea. Tangy fruits like apples and peaches as well as the consumption of plenty of fruit juices and water aid in nourishing the throat chakra.

The third eye chakra which is responsible for the sharpness of third eye sight and a profound sense of the psychical gifts we all have is nourished by consuming such items as grapes, blueberries, grape juice and wine.

Detoxifying the body is beneficial to the crown chakra which is our emotional and spiritual center. This is done by the ritual inhalation of incense and herbs and by fasting.

When we influence our chakras by stimulation, we do influence our health. When we do so we become more responsive in our everyday and spiritual life, while we are more able to tune in completely to our surroundings and various other elements of the metaphysical and physical environment in which we live our lives.

Pick an ailment--any ailment--and chances are, Bill Gottlieb can succinctly crystallize the problem, propose its root cause, and describe a handful of nonmedical remedies for treatment. Creator and supervising editor of the bestselling Doctors Book of Home Remedies, this 25-year veteran of the health field draws from more than 300 alternative care practitioners (including holistic nutritionists, licensed acupuncturists, massage therapists, and the occasional swami) to present a thick textbook worthy of gracing the reference shelf of any family or health provider. Serious physical ailments like asthma, HIV and AIDS, stroke, and cancer receive equal attention with pesky afflictions like oily hair, acne, nightmares, and wrinkles. Mental health ailments, such as guilt, anxiety, grief, and shyness, also get their due. Gottlieb's stance is not that individuals should shun their primary care physicians to rely solely on herbs, better nutrition, and other alternative paths. Rather, he seeks to educate readers on the biological effects of such practices and tinctures, to share their documented benefits in helpful detail. Each ailment receives a sidebar titled "Guide to Professional Care," in which Gottlieb outlines symptoms that warrant immediate medical attention. Other sidebars highlight especially helpful treatment--from aromatherapy to meditation--for various troubles. Gottlieb provides an section on alternative healing where he elaborates on the process, benefits, and safety of each general treatment referred to in the book (from acupuncture to yoga therapy). Complete information, an engaging writing style, and visually appealing graphics make this encyclopedia-style book very easy to digest.

alternative medicines and prescribing them means deviating from the regular modes of practicing. The alternative medicine practitioners give medicines in accordance with the system of medical education that they had followed. Often this is termed as the usual procedure of medicines or the standard care, since these products are used with an intention of treating a patient with the regular problems, which would have required regular solutions.

However many patients are not treatable with the regular medicines and conventional treatments. Hence they need to be cured through these alternative systems of medicines but it has been seen that even though these medicines may not be curative all the time, they do help in reducing the impact of diseases to a great extent. One of the best examples here are deadly diseases like cancer, which are often not curable with conventional modes but through options like alternative medicines, they can be cured.

There are various patients who are not a part of the standard care and they require complementary medicine or alternative medicine.

Most webmasters know that Adsense generates a sizeable source of additional advertising income. That is why most of them use it to go after high paying keywords. They have with them the lists that tells what the keywords are and have already used various methods of identifying them. And yet, after putting up these supposed-to-be high paying keywords into their pages, the money they expected to come rolling in is not really coming in.

What is it that they are doing wrong?

Having the pages is with the proper keywords is one thing. But driving visitors to those pages is another matter and often the factor that is lacking.

The thing is, to get visitors to your high paying keyword pages, you need to optimize your site navigation.

Stop for a moment and think about how visitors are using your website. After a visitor has landed on a certain page, they have the tendency to click on another page that sounds interesting. They get there because of the other links that appears on a page that they initially landed on. This is site navigation. It is all about enabling visitors to move about your site. And one way of maximizing your Adsense earnings.

A typical website have menu links on each page. The wording on these links is what grabs a visitors attention and gets them to click on one of the links that will take them to another page of that website. Links that have or are oftentimes good attention-grabbers.

This navigation logic can also be applied to driving traffic to your high paying pages. There are some websites that are getting a lot of traffic from search engines, but have low earnings. The trick is to try and use come cleverly labeled links to get the visitors off that pages and navigate them to the higher earning ones. This is one great way of turning real cheap clicks to real dollars.

Before you begin testing if this same style will work for you and you website, you need to have two things. Something to track and compare and some high earning pages you want to funnel your site traffic to. An option is to select a few of your frequently visited pages. This is ensuring fast result to come by.

Now, the next thing to do is think of ways to get visitors viewing a particular page to try and click on the link that will take them to your high earning pages. Come up with a catchy description for that link. Come up with a catchy and unique description for the link. Think of something that people do not get to see everyday. That will trigger their curiosity enough to try and see what that was all about.

You can also use graphics to grab your readers attention. There is no limitation to what you can do to make your link noticeable. If you are after the success of your site, you will do everything it takes just to achieve that goal. Just be creative. As far as many Adsense advertisers are concerned, there are no written and unwritten laws to follow regarding what they write. Just as long as you do not overstep the guidelines of the search engines, then go for it.

Also remember that it is all about location, location and location. Once the perfect attention grabbing description has been achieved, you have to identify the perfect spot on your page to position that descriptive link to your high paying page.

There is nothing wrong with visiting other websites to see how they are going about maximizing their site navigation. Hot pages or Most read lists are very common and overly used already. Get to know the ones that many websites are using and do not try to imitate them.

Another way of doing it is to try and use different texts on different pages. That way you will see the ones that work and what does not. Try to mix things around also. Put links on top and sometimes on the bottom too. This is how you go about testing which ones get more clicks and which ones are being ignored.

Let the testing begin. Testing and tracking until you find the site navigation style that works best for you site.

"If you are a responsible person who is as conscious about your health as you are about your appearance, you are probably going to do a significant amount of research into tanning before you start making it a regular practice. We were having a fun day together, with games and relaxation by the gas fire place.

However earlier that day, something terrible had happened, an accident like no other...

It was horrific, it was massive, it was a Eating Event. After all, you want that great glowing skin that you get from tanning but not at the expense of your skin's heath. You may ask what is a holiday eating event or accident? It is one of those times where there are so many good foods to eat and so many tempting treats made by your family members.

And you gather up all of this good food, and place it in a buffet style manner like a true Event in .

The accidental part happens when you keep on eating because you want to fit in everything for this Event and you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings for not having 3 helpings of each person's food, so you just go through the stomach pain to chow down until your stomach turns against you.

How, do we deal with these inevitable parties, banquets, dinners, and the large and not-so-healthy Events. As you do this research, you are probably going to see frequent references to tanning lotion and you are going to start asking yourself if you should use tanning lotion when tanning. If we accidentally pig out or over-indulge are we doomed to be labeled as the vacuum cleaner or perhaps the garbage disposal.

First I'm going to remove the word "unintentional" from my vocabulary. The answer for the health-conscious tanner is "definitely".

Tanning lotion provides protection for your skin that is important when you are trying to tan in a way that is mindful of the risks involved in tanning. Do we ever really "accidentally" eat anything at Events? I have a feeling that whenever I eat a piece of pie or perhaps pound of stuffing, it is not on accident.

I don't ever recall accidentally eating a head of broccoli. Additionally, tanning lotions makes tanning easier on you in general because it speeds up the tanning process and improves the look of your tan. No folks that doesn't happen, we all know good and well that we are all responsible for every last morsel we put in our mouths is on purpose, what purpose that is, it's up to you.

So you just indulged in the giant one, the whammy, the greatest Event and celebration, what do you do next. So with tanning lotion, you get the safety side of the process taken care of while also making tanning more efficient for you. First I don't recommend skipping your next meal or meals in the next day to try and make up for that episode of eating.

Let's take a quote from TV accident. It's a win-win situation when you look at it that way!

Your health should certainly be your primarily concern. What happens after you see that snow warning or perhaps the this is only a test or whatever, "we now return to our regular scheduled programming". You should use tanning lotion when tanning primarily because of the protection that it provides for your skin. I don't know if any of them actually say that but I believe I have seen it before. Tanning lotion provides protection from the rays of the sun or tanning booth. Let's apply that to food, after the bender, we not return to our correct assigned eating.

Get right back to our positive habits. This protection helps to reduce the negative effects associated with tanning. Don't beat yourself up just for that one Event. When combined with good tanning practices, you can reduce your risk of cancer from tanning. get right back in the groove, the past is over your shoulder you can't change it, just make the finest of right now.

How about the reverse approach. Tanning lotion also helps to moisturize your skin which is something that it needs in general, irrelevant of the tanning process.

And of course, tanning lotion helps with the appearance of the tan. You know that you will be likely losing control or you know there's a family gathering tonight, what are you ever to do? Should you save up your calories and starve the whole day to make up for it? In one word, "No", in two words, "No, No".

If you eat less early in the day you will build anticipation for overeating later in the day and are likely to increase your appetite causing you to binge and eat more than you ever thought possible when the big meal finally does arrive.

Over indulging at any one Event can result in fat gain no matter what the daily calorie balance is, your body can only handle so many calories at one time, anything beyond that has to be stored for later, no mater what your daily total calorie intake is. Moisturized skin has a better appearance which shows off the internal health of your body. Especially if you are just going to be laying on a couch for the rest of the day, your body can just accumulate all the energy after that gathering .

On the other hand if you eat fiber rich foods and drink plenty of water all day long you will be content and will be more likely to be able to control yourself during Events because you won't feel famished and your stomach won't be growling.

Let's review the 2nd corollary of the law of eating...

"Small quantities of anything ' even pure sugar ' will probably not be stored as fat as long as you are in a calorie deficit where you are consuming fewer calories than you burn" That is the answer to all our problems, it is all about size control. The glow that you are trying to obtain from tanning is much more visible on a body that has fresh skin and moisturizing with tanning lotion is one way to get that look. Like car accidents I'm sure you wouldn't mind tapping a grocery cart at 1 mile an hour on your soft rubber bumper. Additionally, tanning lotion can be used with good tanning habits to develop a more even tan which is a desirable appearance among most people who enjoy tanning. That's kind of like just eating one piece of way with some fish for the main entree at your gathering.

In essence the donut won't hurt you one bit, not a single bit, it will help you psychologically by rewarding your taste buds for a moment, then you can be diligent for another several days or even a week.

But let that pie get out of hand, and have seconds, along with 2 portions of grandma's pumpkin pie, and several of your sister's snicker doodles and your Event has turned sour.

Next time any of us are at that Event or holiday extravaganza which always is centered on food, it should be a big relief for to know you can eat whatever you want with little or no ill effect on your body composition, as long as you respect the law of calorie balance.

Everyone wants to be in the best health possible. Sleeping well, having lots of energy and living a pain-free life are attainable goals for most of us. Unfortunately, there is so much confusing information available as to how we can be our healthiest, that it's hard to know where to start. Almost daily we hear about some new drug that can lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar, help you lose weight, decrease your blood pressure, ease your pain, or help whatever health condition you may have. We read about miracle foods, the perfect vitamin, tropical juices, and power drinks that are the answer to all your health concerns
Unfortunately, there is no miracle food and most medications only address the symptoms of disease; they rarely cure. Sure, you may feel better for a while, but more often than not, your symptoms return, or you need to continually take greater amounts of medications to obtain the same effectiveness.
What if there were a way to treat the source of your health problems? To make them go away and never come back. This may sound like a tall order, but it happens every day, and has been happening every day for thousands of years. An effective system of healing has been helping people like you feel their best for centuries. That system of healing is Chinese medicine.
When we think about Chinese medicine, most of us think about acupuncture, which is an important component, but acupuncture isn't the only thing that Chinese medicine has to offer. The ancient Chinese sages believed that the best way to stay healthy is through lifestyle and proper diet. Even when someone became sick, the first treatment would often be food therapy and lifestyle changes. Only if those measures failed, would they turn to acupuncture and herbs for a cure.
There are a number of life habits and dietary guidelines based on the teachings of Chinese medicine that are available to each of us. The following guidelines are simple enough, but can impact your health dramatically.
1) Eat according to Chinese food theory. Most people who are trying to improve their health give a considerable amount of thought to what they should eat. Unfortunately, as a culture, we tend to label foods as either good or bad, which has us eliminating whole food groups from our diet.
The Chinese look at food in a different way. Rather than getting bogged down in which food is good and which food is bad, they look at digestion as the key to healthy eating. The healthiest food in the world is useless if your digestion is poor.
Think of your digestive process as a pot of soup simmering over a low heat, say 98 degrees, the temperature of our body. If you add a 24 oz. frozen drink or ice cream to that pot of soup, it stops simmering, and it takes a long time for the soup to get back its warmth to continue cooking. The same is true of your digestion. When you eat or drink very cold foods, it slows your digestion and takes a lot of your internal energy to warm it up again. Eating lots of raw vegetables and fruits have a similar effect. Your energy is consumed in the digestive process.
According to Chinese theory, if you "predigest" foods by cooking them a little bit, they will be better digested and as a result, will be more easily absorbed and converted into the nutrients your body needs for good health. Ideal meals include soups, stews, and stir fries.
As for exactly what to eat, you don't have to look any further than your neighborhood Chinese restaurant for the answer. Eat lots of vegetables, a little protein, a little carbohydrate in the form of whole grains, a little fruit and small amounts of everything else. Drink warm tea or room temperature fluids with your meal.
2) Get moving. If such a thing as the fountain of youth existed, it would probably be in the form of physical activity. The benefits of a regular exercise program are endless, from improved cardiovascular health, better strength and balance, improved immunity, and relief from stress.
According to Chinese theory, moving your body also helps to move energy, which can get blocked, causing pain and illness. There is no one best way to exercise, but in order to avoid overdoing it, try to combine some vigorous movement that makes you breathe hard with one or more of the gentler forms of exercise. Yoga, stretching, Tai Qi, Qi Gong, or simply walking are all considered gentle and relaxing ways to move your body.
3) Get your stress control. There are really only two kinds of emotions: the positive kind that enhance your health, and the negative kind that drain your energy and make you susceptible to illness. The Chinese believe that the emotions are the cause of all internal illnesses. They may have something here, especially when we look at the negative impact of stress on our bodies.
Stress causes chemical reactions in your body, where certain hormones are released that can affect everything from your immune system to your digestion. Inflammatory conditions, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even weight gain can be caused by the hormonal changes brought on by stress.
So how to get a handle on stress? We're all aware of the many methods, classes and exercises available to relieve stress. However, when you're overwhelmed with all the things on your "to do" list, one more class or exercise just becomes another stressful thing to do. The good news is that you can benefit from as little as three minutes of some kind of meditation. A couple of simple (and quick) fixes
-Breath in by expanding your rib cage and belly to a count of four. Hold to a count of seven and release by flattening your belly towards your spine to a count of eight.
-Visualize yourself in a favorite and relaxing place, which can be real or imagined. Spend a few minutes filling in all the details: what you see in every direction, sounds, smells, etc. By doing this, your brain releases the same "feel good" chemicals as if you were actually in that place.
4) Preserve your Essence. In Chinese medicine, your health and the length of your life is determined by something called Essence, or your essential life force. The strength of your Essence is determined by a combination of genetics, your physical constitution, and lifestyle.
One of the smartest ways to stay healthy is to preserve your Essence by living wisely, and not becoming run down. Some of the ways you can deplete your Essence is by overworking, not eating well, skimping on the sleep, and trying to do too many things. Also considered depleting is too much partying, having too many children and having sex too often.
Wise living means getting enough sleep to rejuvenate your body. It means working, but not too hard. Exercising too much, studying and long hours in front of a computer screen are also considered overworking. Eating adequate amounts of the right kinds of food (see above) also protect your Essence.
5) Explore Acupuncture. Acupuncture is an ancient healing system that originated in China thousands of years ago and is still successfully in practice today. It works by addressing the source of your health problem--not just by relieving symptoms. Acupuncture works by balancing energy within your body, which may sound out there and new age. However, every cell in your body produces energy in the form of ATP. The Chinese just operate on the premise that your energy moves in pathways throughout your body. When people become ill or have pain, it's because that energy is blocked in some way or it's depleted. The goal of acupuncture it to restore or maintain health by unblocking or increasing the flow of energy.
The World Health Organization has identified over sixty health conditions that acupuncture can treat, from pain to mental health conditions to digestive problems. In addition, acupuncture is a great way to maintain your good health, too. Give it a try.

Parkinsons disease is a physical problem that Parkinsons disease is a health problem that is most characterized by involuntary movements of the muscles. Damaged nerve cells are the main cause of this condition.
Usually this condition first develops when the brain fails to continue producing the chemical dopamine. This could be a result of a variety of hereditary or environmental factors.
In any case, without regular production of dopamine the part of your brain that controls muscular movement cannot function the way it is meant to. Not only do muscles begin to twitch, but affected individuals may experience tremors.
Eventually, this degenerative process could cause a complete break down of nerve cells. In the advanced stages of this condition the muscles grow increasingly stiff and a persons equilibrium is off.
They may also experience dementia, which is a severe case of memory loss that makes a person appear almost as though they are in a coma. Usually people with Parkinsons disease are diagnosed in their 40s or 50s. However, this disease could develop at much earlier or later ages.
People diagnosed with PD may only find out after they meet with a doctor. During this time they will receive neurological testing which includes reflex testing, muscle movement observation, and vision exams. A doctor might also exam how well (or how not so well) coordinated they are.
A person who suffers this condition might also take other tests, such as an MRI. This will help rule out other possibilities, such as a stroke or brain tumor. Furthermore, it could also indicate the presence of a stroke, or multiple minor strokes.
If this occurs and yet a person is not determined PD, it could greatly increase the risk of it. However, Parkinsons disease is not the only condition that damages nerves.
Huntingtons disease and Alzheimers patients also experience similar symptoms. It is often a complex process by which medical staff confirms that a condition is indeed Parkinsons and neither of these.
Certain psychological changes may be an indication that a person is suffering from PD. Therefore, careful observation of the fluctuation of a persons moods also takes place. The study of a patients fluctuation with mood might also take place.
No blood testing or any other lab testing is available for PD, which is one reason why it is so challenging to treat. The other obstacle that rears its ugly head during the diagnosis stages is that each case is so unique.
No one person will have exactly the same symptoms. Furthermore, no one really knows how severe a case of PD will become. This may make it difficult for some people to plan vacations, retirement, or other important events.
However, just like when any other major change occurs in life people adjust. This may be hard to imagine for a person who is just diagnosed. However, it is meant to provide additional encouragement to sufferers and families.
People who are directly or indirectly experiencing the effects of this condition are advised to seek help from others who have been through it. This web of interdependence makes individuals and families stronger.

Herbs are generally plants or parts of plants that are well liked for the scent that they give, their excellent flavor as well as because of the therapeutic properties they contain. It follows that herbal medicines are the dietary supplements that are taken by people in order to stay healthier and are available in different forms including capsules, tablets, teas, powders as well as extracts and also fresh/dried plants. However, there is no guarantee that the herbal medicine that you take will provide you the desired results because some are known to cause problems with your health while others may be less than effective while still others may only work when taken along with other drugs.
No Guarantee
Before using herbal medicine it is advisable to take the advise of your doctor, take the proper dosage which should be according to what is prescribed by the doctor or what the label suggests, and also take it when being guided by a professional healthcare professional, and if you are pregnant or nursing, ensures that you take proper cautions.
Another name for herbal medicine is Herbalism and even Botanical Medicine, and it pertains to using herbs to get the benefits of their medicinal and therapeutic properties, and it is normal for herbs to contain certain chemicals that can do the human body a world of good. So, it should not come as much of a surprise to learn that such medicines are the oldest form of treating diseases and ailments that has been used by mankind for many thousands of years and also by every culture even up to the present.
When man was still in a primitive stage, herbal medicine was the only known means to treat whatever ailment happened to affect a person, and much of the development of herbal medicine can be attributed to observing animals and also a great deal of trial and error.
Today, according to estimates set forth by the World Health Organization (WHO) there are believed to be as many as four billion people or about eight percent of the human race that are using herbal medicine as a major means to treat their ailments. And, you can be sure that most native peoples use herbal medicine as their primary form of treating the various ailments that they may be suffering. The example of ephedra shows how the herb has been used by Traditional Chinese Medicine for well over two thousand years in treating ailments that included asthma as well as certain respiratory illnesses.
There are three broad classifications of herbal medicine today which includes Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and also Western Herbalism with the first two being very sophisticated means of treating and diagnosing illnesses while the third one is derived from folk medicine. And, today more and more Americans are being taken up by the supposed benefits of herbal medicine, which is why it is gaining in popularity there as well. That’s not surprising because herbal medicine can produce some very useful results including effectively treating cholesterol and diabetes.

Hair loss sufferers wake up in the morning and check their pillows for amounts of hair that have fallen out. Hair loss sufferers check their combs and brushes after every use and try to count the number of hairs contained therein. Hair loss sufferers put on their glasses and check the number of hairs in the shower or sink after each wash. Hair loss sufferers grow anxious, nervous, and scared. How much will go today, and how soon will I begin to look bald to others? They worry about the impressions they will make on bosses, future bosses, friends, co-workers, and even strangers who see them in public places. What a horrible way to live!If hair loss is beginning to be a daily worry for you, do something about it! Check with your physician to ensure that there is not some physiological cause which can be remedied. Some diseases have hair loss as early symptoms, and certainly you want to know if you are diabetic and suffering from Lupus. Bacterial and fungal infections can cause hair loss, and can certainly be cured. Worry, anxiety, stress, and major life traumas can cause it. Surgery can cause it. Pregnancy can cause it. All of these are either temporary or controllable, and that should bring you relief.If, however, you are among the millions of adults who are simply the products of your heredity and/or hormones, you must look in other directions. 1. First and foremost, take care of your body with good diet and exercise. These things affect hair health and can slow down the loss of your hair. 2. Find ways to reduce stress and anxiety. Exercise, Yoga, meditation, etc. are good activities for this. 3. Take care how you treat your hair. Do not pull at it, comb or brush it harshly, or use harsh shampoos. Reduce use of colorants and other harsh chemicals. Try to manipulate your hair as little as possible. Reduce the use of blow dryers and curling irons. 4. Investigate and experiment with the wide variety of products available to reduce hair loss. The earlier in life you begin this investigation and experimentation, the better your results will be. Products like Provillus, for example, should be used with the first signs of more than normal hair loss. 5. Try natural remedies, such as Saw Palmetto(primarily for men), essential oils and herb solutions. These are available at health/nutrition retailers or on many Internet sites. Again, you will have to experiment to find what works best for you. Every body is unique and will respond differently to different treatments.Whatever the level of your hair loss, if it bothers you, you owe it to your own peace of mind and well-being to explore your options. Do it early on and find what is right for you.

fitness inversion table do for your back?
Did you know that you are physically shorter in the evening
than in the morning (or after sleeping)?
Why? - You might be surprised to learn that it is due to the discs in your spine!
Imagine those little discs getting compressed all day every day due to the affects of gravity.
All that weight bearing and holding yourself up against
gravity causes moisture to be squeezed out of the discs and the discs will be compressed.
This results in a net loss of height during the day as the discs compress..
During the night, while you sleep and because your spine is
no longer bearing vertical weight, the discs reabsorb
healed by the reintroduction of moisture and thicker in the morning.
Fitness inversion tables - can help to counteract that problem.

Out of intense complexities intense simplicities emerge. -- Winston Churchill
Synergy occurs when 2+2 add up to more (or less) than 4. This idea is important in health care for combining treatments carefully and thoughtfully. This point relates both to prevention of disease and coordination of treatment options for people with many different chronic conditions. You put multiple factors together, and they create something bigger ? or at least ?different? ? from what they could do on their own.
Synergy can work for good or bad. Different factors can be synergistic, additive, or even antagonistic (working against each other).
That is, in generating health problems, new research is showing more and more that you might be OK with exposure to one risk factor, but two or more risk factors together really increase your risk of a negative outcome (illness).
Recently, for instance, a study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that mice who were exposed to both polluted air and a high-fat diet had a lot more plaque build-up (over 40%) in the largest artery in the body, the aorta, than did mice who had no pollution exposure and a good fat diet (13%) or just a high-fat diet by itself (26%). This kind of interaction of pollution and high fat in the diet raises the risk for heart disease down the road.
In other words, the more risk factors that can be reduced, the better off you are likely to be. In practical terms, this can mean taking a good look at the location of where you live and work. Urban environments tend to have the greatest pollution of particles in the air, which is the kind of air pollution studied in the recent article. People who have long daily commutes to and from work or who live or spend many hours a day near busy traffic areas are going to be at greater risk from particle pollution in the air from vehicle exhausts.
What if you just can't change your location for now? Then at least take a serious look at the fat content of your diet. Both the amount and the type of fat may make a difference for different health risks. A diet that contains healthier fats (with lots of omega-3 fatty acids, as in wild Alaskan salmon) and/or the olive oil kinds of fats as in the Mediterranean diet, may be a way to transition away from the worse kinds of fats (the saturated variety) and hopefully too high a fat content in your diet.
General public health recommendations are for consuming less than 30% of your calories from fat and to emphasize the healthier types of fats (e.g., from olive, canola, or soy oils, non-hydrogenated versions). Lower fat and the right kinds of fat may lower your risk for illnesses such as heart disease and certain cancers.
Another place where synergy is starting to come into play is in food additive research. A new study looking at the toxicity of four common food additives ? two different food colorings, aspartame, and L-glutamic acid ? showed that combinations were toxic to developing nerve cells, whereas the isolated items by themselves were not.
We don't know for sure that these findings will translate into worries past the test tube stage, but they raise concerns. Our whole conventional way of thinking about toxic risks is to test each risk by itself. The trouble is, the world is all jumbled up together ? and things do combine. We know very little about what the combinations may mean for our long-term health outcomes, even if the single ingredients are OK.
In the real world, all of us are exposed to more than two factors at a time. The research is limited because of the difficulty in people juggling in their minds more than two factors. But reality is complicated. Complex, really. So, we don't know much at all about the interactions of different types or classes of factors for good or bad in our everyday lives.
So, synergy research for bad outcomes (illness) make us wonder if combining more than one treatment option might often produce larger benefits than staying too focused on only one thing. That is why the whole systems approach to making your health care decisions makes sense.
Sure, you have to start one thing at a time or it gets too overwhelming. But you can build on each step that you do take. For example, if you have chronic pain, would a combination of osteopathy or chiropractic or massage AND acupuncture help you more than staying with just one alone? Practitioners often claim that these kinds of benefits occur, but very little research has examined this possibility. We'll keep our eyes open for studies on package of care and let you know as they come out.
There is some research in diabetes prevention that hints at the advantages of a full package of treatments together versus a single drug. Intensive lifestyle coaching reduced the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus (the most common type, especially in persons who are overweight) by 58%, whereas the drug with usual lifestyle suggestions only helped reduce risk by 31%. These are in comparison with just lifestyle suggestions alone. So, don't count on a drug alone to do everything possible in solving the complex problems that come together in chronic disorders and diseases.
In short, prevention and treatment can be both simple and complex. Knowing how to use the synergy concept empowers you to make more informed choices about your lifestyle and your treatment.

Alternative medical techniques most commonly are outside of conventional medical care (1). In other words, they promote wholistic healing for pain management. Wholistic healing involves treating the whole person, body, emotions, mind, relationships, and spirit (1). Alternative medical techniques include:
* Acupuncture
* Massage
* Reflexology
* Craniosacral therapy
* Mind/body techniques
* Guided imagery
* Acupressure
* Yoga
* Meditation
* Prayer
* Thermal treatments
* Chiropractic approach
* And others
More doctors are recommending alternative medical techniques to patients for chronic pain. Recent surveys in the United States demonstrated that alternative medical techniques were important for personal healthcare and maintaining well being (2). Also, there is evidence that one or more alternative medical techniques can help patients with: cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain, neck pain, Tourette syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and many more.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of complementary medicine in which fine needles are inserted in the skin at specific points along supposed lines of energy (3). Acupuncture is a part of Chinese traditional medicine that has been around for at least 2,500 years (4). Today, millions of Americans are utilizing this approach for pain management, or as a combination with traditional medical treatments, when conventional medicine is not working for them.
In acupuncture, you should expect:
* One to several needles inserted at varying depths (4)
* Needles may be left in for 15 to 30 minutes (4)
* 2-4 treatments for one condition (2)
There are many conditions that can receive relieve from acupuncture. The top ten conditions treated are: back pain, joint pain or stiffness, neck pain, severe headache, recurrent pain, allergies, arthritis/gout/lupus/fibromyalgia, depression/anxiety, joint/bone injury, and sleepiness (2).
How effective is Acupuncture?
There are a multitude of studies that have confirmed the effectiveness of acupuncture on pain. One study examined the immediate effect of acupuncture stimulation on the most painful point in patients with low-back pain. It found that:
* low-back pain was given immediate relief (5).
* the amount of pain was reduced (5).
Another study examined the treatment of Tourette Syndrome using the acupuncture method. The research indicated:
* 97% of the acupuncture group was effectively treated (6).
* 82% were (6).
Massage Chronic Pain
Massage can also be used to relieve pain for a variety of conditions and usage is increasing. Medical massage therapy is being offered in hospitals 30% more since 2004 because of its benefits for not only pain management, but also for depression and anxiety (7). The top three reasons hospitals offer massage are: stress relief (71%), pain management (67%), and relief for cancer patients (52%) (7).
There are several types of massages including:
* Deep tissue massage: focuses on the deeper muscles and soft tissue to relieve chronic pain and tension (8).
* Swedish massage: emphasizes that all strokes go towards the heart. It is comprised of five strokes that stimulate the blood in the soft tissues (8).
* Hot stone massage: involves the placement of heated stones to the body during massage (8).
* Lymphatic massage: aims to increase lymphatic circulation through the bodys filtration system, so the body is detoxified and supporting our immune system (8).
* Thai massage: involves a choreographed set of techniques performed on a mat has been around for thousands of years in Thailand (8).
* Marma therapy massage: is a form of Ayurvedic massage developed in ancient India that aims to stimulate 107 which are vital, junction points between mind and matter (8).
How effective is massage?
There is an ample amount of research that indicates massage can be very beneficial in relieving pain. One study performed by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that:
* Massage can reduce pain up to four years in arthritis patients (9).
* It can reduce the number of physician visits (9).
Furthermore, massage therapy could:
* Reduce pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbances caused by low-back pain (10).
* Increase range of motion in patients (10).
* Relieve nausea and pain in cancer patients (11).
* Reduce pain by 50% in cancer patients (12).
* Reduce the amount of pain medication needed for pain control (12).
What is reflexology?
Reflexology involves applying manual pressure on specific points of the feet (13). This technique has been used as a healing technique in China for thousands of years (8). The organs that can be affected and return to optimal functioning by reflexology include (8):
* Lungs
* Bladder
* Pituitary glands
* Kidneys
* Stomach
* Spleen
How effective is reflexology?
There is research that suggests the effectiveness of reflexology. One study examined the effects on multiple sclerosis patients and found that reflexology:
* Significantly improved paresthesia, urinary symptoms and spasticity (13).
* Improvement on muscle strength (13).
* Paresthesia improvement lasted for at least three months after the sessions (13).
Other studies show that reflexology:
* Reduces anxiety in cancer patients (14).
* Relieves nausea and vomiting from a variety of medical conditions (14).
* Decreases fatigue (14).
* Decreases diastolic blood pressure and triglyceride levels while improving life satisfaction (14).
* Decreases depression and perceived stress (14).
* Increases quality of sleep and serotonin levels (14).
What is craniosacral therapy?
John Upledger introduced this technique in the 1970s. This therapy involves gently guiding and releasing tensions through very mild pressure on the different cranial bones near the sutures of the skull, where one bone lies next to another (8). However, this therapy can be used all over the body, as well. Ironically, this therapy is performed with little applied pressure, usually less than the weight of a nickel (8).
How effective is craniosacral therapy?
Craniosacral therapy (CST) can also provide relief for a variety of medical conditions and types of pain. They include:
* Headaches and migraines (15)
* TMJ dysfunction (15)
* Back and neck pain (15)
* Chronic fatigue (15)
* Stress (15)
* Central nervous system disorders (15)
* Orthopedic problems (15)
* Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (16)
Furthermore, CST in combination with massage and other manual therapies can be an effective treatment for chronic pain conditions (17). CST may enhance the bodys ability to naturally correct imbalances and dysfunctions that contribute to painful conditions (17). John Upledger, the founder of CST, says that in thousands of cases, CST has proven to enhance general health, reduce accumulated stress, strengthen central nervous system function and improve resistance to disease (18).
In addition, one case study measured functional improvements after a series of CST treatments. It found that:
* Pain scores decreased 52% from pretreatment to discharge (19).
* Disability scores decreased 93% from pretreatment to discharge (19).
* The pain and disability scores did not change greatly 5 weeks after discharge, suggesting a lasting effect of CST (19).
What other are effective?
* A form of acupressure, called shiatsu, can relief pain from Parkinsons Disease, fibromyalgia, musculoskeletal aches, irritable bowel syndrome, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis (20).
* Chiropractic therapy can help treat musculoskeletal conditions, including problems in the joints, bones, muscles and connective tissues (21).
* Guided imagery can improve functional status and sense of self-efficacy for managing pain and other symptoms of Fibromyalgia (22).
* Guided imagery can boost the immune system, alter blood pressure and decrease pain (23).
Other Information
One drawback to alternative medicine is that insurance companies may not cover some of these services. For example, one survey found that 60% of respondents reported that insurance companies did not reimburse their acupuncture services (2). So, discussing s
ervice coverage on alternative medical techniques with your insurance may be important. Many people see the benefits of some techniques to pay out-of-pocket.

(HealthDay News) -- Burdened by an overbearing boss? Your heart may pay the price, according to new research.

The Swedish study found that workers' risks for angina, heart attack and death rose along with the reported incompetence of their bosses.

"This study is the first to provide evidence of a prospective, dose-response relationship between concrete managerial behaviors and objectively assessed heart disease among employees," said lead researcher Anna Nyberg, from the department of public health sciences at the Karolinska Institute, and Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University.

"Enhancing managers' skills -- regarding providing employees with information, support, power in relation to responsibilities, clarity in expectations, and feedback -- could have important stress-reducing effects on employees and enhance the health at workplaces," Nyberg said.

The report was published in the Nov. 25 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

According to the researchers, being a good boss includes consideration for employees, setting clear goals, setting realistic expectations, communicating and giving feedback, managing change, including people in decision-making and delegating authority.

For the study, Nyberg's team collected data on more than 3,100 Swedish men who participated in the Work, Lipids, and Fibrinogen Stockholm study. The men, 19 to 70 years of age, had their hearts checked at work between 1992 and 1995. The researchers then matched these men with hospital records for heart disease illness and death up to 2003.

During the follow-up period, there were 74 cases of fatal and nonfatal heart attacks or angina or death from heart disease, the researchers found.

Nyberg's group found that the more competent the men thought their bosses were, the lower their risk of developing heart disease. In contrast, the poorer men rated their boss's leadership ability, the higher the risk for heart disease. In fact, the risk increased the longer someone worked in the same stressful environment.

"Stress-related diseases are a large problem in our society," Nyberg said. "The workplace is one area in which stress occurs and thus can be reduced. This study suggests that managers have key roles in determining stress-related factors at work, which means that psychosocial work environment interventions could be directed towards managers in order to reduce stress in employees," she said.

Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow is a professor of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He said a number of studies have suggested that stressful work environments boost workers' risk for cardiovascular events.

"However, none of these studies have demonstrated causality, and it remains entirely unknown whether making these types of changes in the workplace would produce favorable effects on cardiovascular health," Fonarow said.

A related report -- this time in the Nov. 25 online edition of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health -- finds that taking sick leave from your job for mental health raises your risk of an early death.

"People who take medically certified absence spells of one week or more have a 60 percent excess risk of early death," said lead researcher Jane Ferrie, from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London, U.K. "This excess risk is associated with some of the commonest diagnoses for sickness absence, in particular mental disorders," she said.

For the study, Ferrie's group collected data on more than 19,000 French public utility workers, aged 37 to 51, who took part in the GAZEL study.

The researchers found that from 1993 to 2007, 902 people died, 144 of them women. From 1990 to 1992, there were about 12,500 medically certified sick leaves lasting seven or more working days, involving 41 percent of the employees. These employees were 60 percent more likely to die early, Ferrie noted.

Women took sick leave more frequently than men. The data showed that, for both men and women, mental ill health and digestive and circulatory diseases in men were associated with the risk of dying early.

"Workers with medically certified absence for mental diagnoses should be considered a population at a higher risk of fatal disease," Ferrie concluded. "These diagnoses include mental health problems, often viewed as the diagnosis most likely to be used as an excuse for skiving."

But Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine noted again that this research did not prove causality.

"It may be that workers who are ill are less apt to be satisfied," Katz said. "But it is not unreasonable that dissatisfaction at work could translate into great risk for ill health, and even premature death," he said.

It stands to reason that how we interact with others in the workplace is important to our health and quality of life, Katz said. "Given how much time we spend at work, relationships there clearly count. Intervention studies that aim to optimize the interaction between employee and manager and test for health outcomes would clearly make sense," he said.
