Though he is thin, he is hyperactive and keeps jumping all day. I feed him thrice a day and also give him nutrie nuggets, dog biscuits and some bread in between. I feed him with home food mixed with dog food (Pedigree pup food) but the moment he sees food he goes mad and takes less than half a second ( yes not even a minute!) to GULP ( too hungry to chew!) the food. I have tried increasing his diet but that only makes his stomach lose and results in diarrahea if i overfeed. My vet also says he doesnt hve worms.
But I always have to chain him for long hours else he keeps searching for food and also doesnt allow us to have our meals properly ( will keep crooning). He wants to find food in dustbins, paper wrappers and all odd places.
He even doesnt sometime chew chicken bones but is so hungry that he gulps them down so the moment you feed him.
He also eats his own and I hve to keep a strict check on him. Please help me!
I feed him three time a day, morning, afternoon, night. also sometimes in evening with some dog biscuits.

What Does A Dog Know?
Dogs know when they are with people who like them.
They know how to make choices that will affect their situation.
Recent studies have shown they have a sense of fair play (Rover got five biscuits and I only got one, Im not doing the trick anymore).
Dogs and other animals can detect fear, or maybe they sense it because of a perceptiveness to changes in our body chemistry. They can sniff out disease and find misplaced items or lost people.
Dogs know when were sad, and they occasionally are mad (What do you mean I cant sleep on the bed anymore?), but then quickly forgive us.
Dogs could survive just fine without human companions, as the marauding coyotes in my neighborhood attest to, yet they choose to stick with us. How infrequently dogs are walked on a leash these days. How is Dog Beach even possible? Quite often when people arrive in our parking lot, they fling open the cars rear door and out jumps Fido, free as a bird. The humans trust that Fido will not wander too far, and will quickly return when called miraculously he does. He listens despite new smells that need to be explored and investigated, despite the little bird sitting on a branch over there that would be fun to chase, despite a pressing obligation to mark every low growing shrub as newly conquered territory.
Dogs know when a person is putting trust in them, and they desperately want to live up to our expectations. (Training and bonding over time go into developing this kind of relationship, and understanding of a dogs distinct personality. It would obviously not be a good idea to let a dog off-leash without reasonable assurance that he or she will come back when called.)
If Mama could talk to us with human words, what else would she tell us that she knows? Instead she communicates with her eyes, with sniffs, with quiet gestures - like her head on your shoulder, or a gentle paw on your wrist. She surely must be wise beyond her years. Could she have tried to make the best of a bad situation, while hoping for something better to turn out for her? What does she dream of? How does she feel about her life today? Hopefully when modern science allows us to more effectively communicate with animals, Mama will still be around, so she can write her memoirs.

Gregor Mendel, it didn't work. Personally, I have always wondered why anyone would breed an inferior dog at all, even if you could "blend" your way out of it. Why not find the best dog you can find and breed it to the best dog you can find and get an even better dog? Or, as the saying goes; "breed the best to the best and hope for the best."
I had a lady bring an AKC registered German Shepherd to me for an instinct test. According to her, this dog had everything he needed to be a champion, except temperament. He was shy, timid and anxious. In the show ring, he was only able to fake it and exhibit "the look of eagles" for about half as long as needed to win. When panic set in and his true nature reappeared, his head drooped, his ears flattened and his stride shortened. I only half expected her to tell me no when I asked whether she would breed this dog, but was utterly dissappointed to hear her tell me adamantly, "absolutely." Her reasoning was that she had bitches in her kennel that would easily cover up his withering temperament with their boldness, and his tremendous coloring, conformation and movement were just too good to pass up. What she didn't know is that Mr. Mendel's work had proved her wrong 150 years ago.
Mr. Dathe closes in his article by suggesting that we should not breed to mask our dog's faults, not try to "blend" them away, but breed dogs to enhance their strong points. Then he gives some very good advice when he says; "consider it.

PRLog (Press Release) –
Jun 15, 2009 – GOFFSTOWN, NEW HAMPSHIRE
Shattuck Sealcoating and Calvanos Sealcoating, two of the asphalt industrys most respected names in southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts, have just joined forces with BLACK DAWG SEALCOAT. With these new additions, BLACK DAWG now has six franchise locations-making it one of the largest operators of its kind in New England.
Since BLACK DAWGs inception less than four years ago, Jack Child, a former military officer, pilot and founder of BLACK DAWG SEALCOAT, has set out to transform not only the publics perception of the asphalt maintenance industry, but to transform the industry itself. Hes taken two giant steps forward with the blending of the Shattuck and Calvano crews into BLACK DAWG.
Ron Shattuck, owner of Shattuck Paving, has been in the paving and sealcoating industry for over 30 years, taking over the business his father started in 1971. Based in Milford, New Hampshire, Mr. Shattuck has added five new employees since signing up with BLACK DAWG. We chose BLACK DAWG because we like the look and feel of the company from the top down. The branding of BLACK DAWG is enticing and memorable. That black dog really evokes positive associations and its a good intro to my customers, noted Shattuck.
Mr. Shattuck will continue to operate Shattuck Paving under his own name, but will fold his sealcoat operation into BLACK DAWG. After 30 years of only carrying the family name, putting on the BLACK DAWG uniform was not an easy choice, but its one hes glad hes made. We are now a part of the fastest growing brand anywhere in the industry. This is good news for my business, my family, my employees and my customers.
Andy Calvano, founder of Calvanos Sealcoating, is happy to see the positive changes this can bring. m thrilled to pass the torch to Ron and the BLACK DAWG Brand. I know theyll take good care of my many loyal customers.
Pete Christman, owner of the BLACK DAWG franchise in Merrimack Valley, said, I am excited at the possibilities this expansion brings us. BLACK DAWG is reshaping the industry. He added, Even in this economy, my own operation has doubled this year, and with the addition of Ron Shattuck and his 30 year reputation for delivering value, I see nothing but growth for BLACK DAWG.
Growing in a down economy? How can that be? s a lot of diner talk where everybody sort of complains about the economy and how they cant operate a business in this environment, said Shattuck. My answer is this-you make adjustments, stay focused on customer service and you keep an eye open for opportunity and growth. BLACK DAWG is the perfect fit for me and my crews.
BLACK DAWGS strategy has been to win market share through superior customer service and a professional approach. In an industry sometimes sorely lacking in attentive service, BLACK DAWG succeeds by placing the consumer first and exceeding their expectations. Every contact, every conversation with the customer is designed to build trust in us. And that trust saves our customers thousands of dollars because routine maintenance extends the life of their asphalt, said Child.
This professional, customer service approach touches all aspects of the business. For starters - real people answer the phone. With Childs military background, its no surprise the BLACK DAWG crews are neat, uniformed and professional. Each team member is trained to the same high standards. Their trucks are clean and distinctive with the eye-catching BLACK DAWG logo and the equipment is state-of-the-art. Childs efforts were quickly recognized. Less than two years after launching BLACK DAWG, the company received the Citizens Bank Not Your Typical Business Award.
BLACK DAWG franchises use only the finest commercial grade materials for sealcoating and crack filling driveways and parking lots. And, through BLACK DAWGs sister company, YELLOW DAWG STRIPING, parking lot line striping services are available as well. All work is backed by a full Warranty. The company philosophy is to deliver the most value for the consumers hard-earned money.
With the addition of the Shattuck and Calvano operations, BLACK DAWG SEALCOATs reach has doubled in size overnight. BLACK DAWG service areas now include southern New Hampshire, the Merrimack Valley and I-93 corridor, the seacoast of New Hampshire, Andover and North Andover, MA, northern Worcester County, MA, northern Middlesex County, MA and Fairfield County, CT.
Every BLACK DAWG SEALCOAT franchisee owns a black dog or sponsors the adoption of one from a local shelter. No word yet on when Ron will be bringing his new addition home to his seven children. ve been talking about it with my family, and were all excited about the dog, but the business has been hopping since we joined BLACK DAWG, and I havent had a chance to really start looking. But thats a good problem, right? he added laughing.
BLACK DAWG SEALCOAT is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau (Shattuck brings with him an A+ Rating) and a member of the Exeter, Salem, Souhegan Valley and Fairfield Chambers of Commerce. In addition, BLACK DAWG actively supports local and national non-profit organizations including the PLUS Company, Fisher House for Families of Disabled Veterans, the Easter Seals Veterans Count Auction, Boys and Girls Clubs, the Red Cross, Bedford Little League and the Bedford Humane Society, among others.

Faced with the dying embers of the Richard Worth scandal at his press conference yesterday (audio report, video), John Key reached for gasoline, not water. The press gallery had begun a simple enough line of enquiry – what HAD caused Key to lose trust in Worth? There were many valid ways of not answering that question but Key chose the worst possible one – by refusing to answer it at all.

Truthiness: “The Colbert Report” Heads To IraqColbert? In Iraq? Nothing could be further from the truthiness. The Emmy award winning The Colbert Report goes where no television show has ever gone before – Iraq. Though that statement maybe far fetched, indeed Stephen Colbert’s show has become the first show in USO history to produce a week of shows in a combat zone.

Veterinary care:
Before you bring your new dog home be sure you have checked out the local Vets in your area. Find one that is close by and one you feel comfortable with. Ask to meet the Veterinarian in person before bringing your new dog home. I say this because it was a mistake that I made when I moved to a new State. Unfortunately I had gone to the local pound and spotted a young Bearded Collie I just had to have. In my excitement I hurried home to pick up a crate for his transportation. After loading up the crate I started to back out of my driveway when all of a sudden I heard a loud terrifying screech of agony. I jumped out of the car and found that I had just run over my beloved cat, Sam, who loved to ride in the car with me. I scooped her up and brought her to the only vet I had seen on the main highway. Once inside, Sam meowing in pain, and myself hysterical, I found that the Vet did not show much of a caring personality. He told us both to shut up! I dont know, maybe he had a bad day, but after he put my cats broken leg in a cast that was bigger than my cat, I decided Id better find another vet as quickly as possible. So talk to your friends and neighbors to see who they recommend. Like well and sick human examinations, the same is just as vital for your new dog. One of the prerequisites to belonging to a Therapy Dog group is a health check by your veterinarian. You will have to provide a record of the dogs shots and fecal samples. Also if you buy a dog from a breeder they may only give you a certain amount of time to have the dog checked against health defects by your vet. Once you have found a vet, also find out where the nearest after hours vet clinic is and keep the phone and address handy. When you least expect it, you'll probably need it.
Crate:
Some people think it is horrible to put the dog in a crate when in fact if the dog is introduced correctly from the beginning he will view that crate as his den and will use it when the household becomes too distracting and he needs some down time. Placing the crate in the proper location is crucial to the way the dog will view his new den. Put the crate in a room where the family spends most of its time, not in an isolated area. Pups that howl or bark when they are in their crate do so because they are lonely. I also recommend that a crate be placed in the bedroom with you at night. I cant tell you how many of my puppies cried at night but would immediately calm down as soon as they heard my voice, where as pups that were isolated in the kitchen or bathroom continued to cry throughout the night. By keeping him among the family he feels that his pack is nearby. Remember that a dog thinks it is always a member of a pack, whether it is with his litter mates or his new human family. The crate you purchase should be large enough for the dog to stand up in and turn around in when he becomes an adult dog. You should also take into consideration whether you will be putting the dog in a crate for transporting him to therapy visits. If so, you may want to look at the newer lightweight collapsible crates on the market today.
Dog Bed:
Dont spend oodles of money on a cushy dog bed until you are sure that the dog is out of the chewing stage. An expensive bed will only end up in the garbage. Try using an old cotton blanket or towel first, one that has your scent on it. Check the towel or blanket often for loose threading. Any towel or blanket with loose threading should be discarded and replaced. You dont want the threads to end up wrapped around your dogs intestines. When you are sure your dog will use a bed for sleeping and not for chewing then you can buy him a bed fit for a king.
C) The right type of dog food:The wrong type of human food:
Again this is where doing your homework and research on the breed you want is important. Many pet food companies are now realizing that not all dog food is good for every breed. If you purchase a large breed dog you will want to put him on a dog food made for large breeds. It is important for a large dog to slow down the growth process while he is young to help prevent bone problems such as hip dysplasia later. Always ask the breeder what brand of dog food they currently have the puppy or dog on. Should you decide to go with another brand, you will need to introduce the new brand to the dog slowly to avoid stomach upset. You do this by adding a little each day to his old brand until he can fully tolerate the new brand. Please read the ingredients on the dog food you purchase. A brand that lists the first ingredient as chicken or lamb is probably a better brand than one that lists corn meal or other grains first. A well balanced dog food plays a major role in your dogs health and appearance. Health and appearance play a major role in therapy dog work. Avoid human foods, especially fatty foods such as ham, pork, steak, etc. These can cause pancreatitis in dogs.
) Foods and Chemicals that can be deadly for your dog:
Given the fact that puppies seem to unknowingly seek out everything that is bad for them I have made a list of the most common house hold foods and items that, at the very least will make your dog sick, and at the very worst, will kill him. I mention this because so many times on my therapy visits the residents family is visiting. Usually the family brings with them sweets, or home cooked meals. Even the best trained dog can wane with the smell of pot roast in the air! If you suspect your dog has gotten into any of these items call your vet immediately. If your vet is not available here is the number to the ASPCA Poison Control Center hotline, 1-888-426-4435. Someone is available twenty four hours a day seven days a week. Make sure to have a credit card handy as they may charge you a fifty dollar consultation fee.
Chocolate, Tomatoes, Grapes /Raisins, Onions, garlic, Moldy food in trash, Coffee, Macadamia Nuts, Avocados, Garlic, Yeast Dough, Alcohol, Orange peals, seeds from fruit such as apple seeds (contains arsenic)
Antifreeze, (sometimes found puddle on the ground in a parking lot) Potpourri, Nicotine, Vitamins, Iron pills, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Household Cleaners, Mouse/Rat Poison, Glow Jewelry. (Glow jewelry is usually sold to children at fairs or carnivals.)
Keep in mind that if the pup gets into a chemical/cleaner you don't want to induce vomiting as it can cause just as much damage when it is vomited back up. IF the dog gets into medication then you will want to induce vomiting and bring the dog to your vet for supportive care. To induce vomiting use 3% hydrogen peroxide, one teaspoon per ten pounds of body weight on the back of the tongue. The dog should vomit within fifteen minutes
Dog bowls:
Stainless steel bowls work the best. A plastic bowl can easily be chewed and ingested by a teething puppy causing bowl obstruction or upset stomachs, where as stainless steel bowls are for the most part un-chewable and can be placed in the dishwasher for cleaning. However if your pup happens to be the type that inhales his food then a plastic bowls with cylinders in it can slow down the eating process. If youve purchased a large breed dog, get a dish holder that can be raised up off the ground as your dog grows. I have found through trial and error, a dog, such as a Newfoundland that loves water, will play in the bowl of water that lay on the floor making it his personal pool rather than a drinking dish! After many months of lugging the Shop Vac around sucking up water messes I finally got wise and purchased a raised bowl! While residents at health care facilities do not usually have bowls of water lying around, there are sometimes potty pans on a chair or near a bed. If a dog will drink from a toiletwell, you know!
Proper leash and collar:
The leash should be six feet long, one inch thick, and made of cotton as it will be easier on your hands when training. You should also purchase a twenty foot lead made of cotton for training purposes. The daily use collar should be a buckle or snap collar, not a choke chain. Too many owners put a choke chain on their dog and come home to find that the dog has hung itself to death. The ideal collar is a Martingale training collar which is usually used for Greyhounds as their neck and head are smaller than their body. While I do not receive compensation for products I may mention, I will pass along a brand name that I found worked best for me hoping it will save you time and wasted money. Alpine or Lupine makes a good martingale collar and leash. You can find both leashes and collars at your local pet store or in a dog catalog. Another advantage to these products is that they are guaranteed for life, so even if your dog chews through it, it will be replaced for free. With seven dogs, I have replaced many leashes!
Toys, toys, toys!
A young pup will have the need to chew however it is vital that you monitor this closely as they have a tendency to not only chew, but also swallow what they shouldn't and this leaves open the possibility of an intestinal obstruction which can become a very costly operation. Raw hides, pig ears, greenies, bones, stuffed toys, clothing, squeak toys have all been known to cause a problem. Invest in strong chew toys such as the Kong or Nylabone bones that do not come apart easily. Kongs can be stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter giving the dog a more satisfying chew toy. When they are frozen with the ingredients they last longer and satisfy the painful gums of teething. They are also dishwasher safe. Frozen bagels are also a good choice for teething dogs. Any toy that seems to be falling apart should be thrown out.
Outside Run:
If your property is not fenced you will need a safe place to shelter the dog outside when you cannot be with him. By a safe place I do not mean tied to a tree. Not only is that detrimental to a dogs mind but his health as well. Make or purchase a dog pen. A sturdy pen will ensure that no other animal has access to him and keep him safe from harms way. His pen should have adequate room to run, shelter, and be placed in an area where it will get sun and shade throughout the day. If you put the pen in a shaded damp area you are inviting fleas to live with him. Fleas do not care for dry sunny areas. Fleas and therapy work do not go together well! It would take just one person to complain about getting bit by fleas and a facility may ask you not to come back.
Also if your dog has to be housed outside for part of the day make sure the water supply is plentiful. For the spring and summer months I recommend a water dish that hooks up to the hose which insures that your dog will have plenty of water should you be out later than expected. You can find them in pet stores and at Wal-Mart for about fifteen dollars. If you are worried about the dog eating through the hose connected to the dish I found that sliding the hose through an inexpensive piece of P.V.C. piping helps. For the fall and winter months I recommend a heated water dish. This keeps the water from freezing in cold temperatures. The electric cord attached to the dish is encircled with metal coil so the dog cannot chew through it. But again, if you are worried, you can put it through a piece of P.V.C. pipe. You can also find this bowl at Wal-Mart or in a dog catalog for about twenty five dollars.
I do not recommend that the dog spend every waking hour in a pen for the same reason they should not be tied to a tree. The object of a pen is to keep the dog safe from harm when you cannot be with him, not to make it his living quarters. If you do not want a dog in the home then get a Gerbil!
There are many types of invisible fencing on the market today. If you decide to go with an invisible type fence please be sure to do your homework. I have heard of situations where the collar that is worn in conjunction with invisible fence has malfunctioned, thereby continuously shocking the unsuspecting pooch. Personally I dont care to have my dog punished for being outside which is what your dog will surely learn with a malfunctioning collar. If you decide to go this route, check the collar often to insure it is working properly. Also keep in mind that the receiver collar that must be worn in conjunction with an invisible fence is usually the only collar your dog can wear. Any other collar placed on the dog while wearing the receiving collar could shock the dog. There are dogs that will at any cost jump right through the fence whether they get shocked or not, thereby ending up loose in the neighborhood. This means your dog is running free with no ID tags! If you really think an invisible fence is what you want, then take a Sharpie permanent marker and write your telephone number on the receiver collar itself so anyone who finds your pooch can call you. As a general rule I use a Sharpie on all of my collars. ID tags are only as good as the collar they stay attached to and with seven rough playing dogs I find the tags are usually pulled off and spread out across the lawn.
Helpful Hint: Should you find that your pooch has extra energy and can easily jump or climb out of the pen, try taking chicken wire or garden fencing and placing it at the top of the pen bending it into the pen slightly at the top to give the dog the visual effect that the top of the pen is also fenced in. For the digger that tries to escape under the pen, bury rail road ties under the pens borders.
Tooth brush, tooth paste nail trimmers:
Buy a dog toothbrush and toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste on a dog. Brushing your dogs teeth is essential to its health care and should become as much of a routine as brushing the dogs fur. Plaque and tarter buildup can cause infections, pain, or the loss of teeth. Not to mention the amount of money you will spend should the dog need dental work. Also, many residents I visit like to give the dog a kiss and bad doggy breath can be a real turn off!
Nail Trimmers:
Buy a sturdy pair of nail trimmers and some styp-tic powder from a pet supply store. I have found that nail trimmers sold at grocery stores do not last very long. Cutting your dogs nails is an important part of grooming for a therapy dog. You dont want the dog lifting his paw for a shake and scratching a resident. Keep in mind how fragile an elderly or childs skin is.
brushes,combs, shampoos, and dryers:
If you have a shot haired dog the soft brushes will probably do. If you have a dog with long hair or a double coat invest in a slicker brush and one tool I would not be without is the Mars Coat King. This strips out the older undercoat and helps with keeping matts at bay. Also included should be a flea comb for all breeds. Always use a dog shampoo as some human shampoos are too harsh on the fur and skin. If you need to use a flea shampoo go exactly by the directions, more is not better and can harm your dogs health. IF you find your dog having a bad reaction to a flea shampoo wash the shampoo off right away using a soap. Dawn dishwashing soap is good for this. You should also have a dog blow dryer as human dryers get too hot for the dogs skin. There are small ones such as the mighty duck and larger commercial ones which are better for dogs with a lot of hair.

Keith knew from the tender age of five that he wanted to be a vet. The Barnett household was always full of animals of all species, including varieties of insects and reptiles! Unlike most children who grow up crazy about animals, Keith never grew out of it, and turned out to be one of the country’s best loved and most successful vets.
The family moved to Southampton when the boys were of school age. When they finished school, Keith stayed an extra year to complete a High School Certificate in Latin, the equivalent of a current A Level. This qualification was essential for him to study to become a vet. During this course, Keith spent a year doing national service. He was posted just eight miles away from home in Winchester with the Royal Army Dental Corps.
In 1949, Keith enrolled at The Royal Veterinary College (RVC), the first step towards a lifetime commitment to the veterinary profession. Keith adored the time he spent at the RVC. After graduating in 1956, he spent a short period in general practice before returning to the RVC as a House Surgeon at the Beaumont Animal Hospital. Here he started his PhD studies, looking at canine retinopathies which he completed in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Studies at the University of Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge, he started a Unit of Comparative Ophthalmology – a feat he would repeat a few years later at the Animal Health Trust – and was appointed Assistant Director of Research. During his time there, he created an internationally renowned centre of excellence.
Keith was awarded the Francis Hogg Prize in 1968, an award presented by the Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons “to the person who has done the most serviceable work towards the advancement of small animal practice.” This was shortly followed in 1971 with two more prizes: The Simon Award from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association “for outstanding contributions in the field of veterinary surgery” and the George Fleming Prize from the British Veterinary Journal “for the prize-winning article of the year.”
Writing articles was something Keith Barnett was definitely no stranger to. During his 53 -year veterinary career, he wrote and contributed to over 130 scientific articles, journals and books. He was a strong believer in learning something new every day, and never stopped studying to remain at the forefront of veterinary ophthalmic expertise.
In 1975, Keith joined the Animal Health Trust in Kentford, near Newmarket, Suffolk, a place which turned out to mean so much to him. He remained working right up until his death.
Keith came to the Animal Health Trust to establish the Unit of Comparative Ophthalmology. He developed this into a unique specialist veterinary ophthalmology referral service and also dedicated resource to investigating ocular disease in animals. Under his guidance and help, the Unit made a huge impact in veterinary ophthalmology and continues to thrive today.
Not long after Keith started at the AHT, he also took over as Head of the Centre for Small Animal Studies. He was a frequent speaker at national and international meetings where he inspired literally thousands of his veterinary colleagues.
Outside work, Keith was a keen collector of antiques. He enjoyed buying old houses, and finding unusual antiques. He was also an art lover, favouring pieces featuring heavy horses or dogs, particularly his beloved Labrador. During his life, Keith owned seven Labradors, a breed he was especially fond of thanks to his work with Guide Dogs for the Blind.
For many years Keith was the principle examiner of all potential guide dogs. As a direct result of his expertise and diligence, hereditary eye problems through the Guide Dog breeding scheme became a rarity. He also spent time as a member of the General Council specialising in veterinary matters. Neil Ewart, of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, said, “Dr Barnett always showed the qualities of a true expert. He would always patiently and thoroughly explain his findings to any member of staff without talking down to them. I last saw him walking around Crufts and he appeared to be his usual cheerful self and I was pleased to have had one last conversation with him when he asked after so many old acquaintances.”
Keith also did a lot of work with Canine Partners, where he was a Trustee for four years. As with the Guide Dogs, Keith examined the eyes of the charity’s assistance dogs. Terry Knott, CEO of Canine Partners, said, “A kinder, more articulate, professional yet gentle and encouraging soul would be hard to find.”
After being recommended by the AHT, and a number of other organisations he worked with, Keith was awarded an OBE in 1993 for Services to the Veterinary Profession, a merit he had truly earned after years of hard work and dedicated care. He was further honoured in 2008 when he was made an Honorary Vice President of the Animal Health Trust.
Keith officially retired from the Animal Health Trust in 1996, but couldn’t bear to be away from the job he loved doing so much, so returned to work part-time less than a year later. Specialising in hereditary ocular disease, and the genetics behind it, Keith carried out eye examinations on litters of puppies, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
In the summer of 2008, however, he was forced to leave work once more following a diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. He came through the intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy regime with flying colours, and, at the beginning of 2009, returned to the AHT to continue the work he so loved.
In March this year, just days before he died, Keith spent three days in Birmingham, at Crufts, meeting old friends and dog breeders. He said he had “a wonderful time” at Crufts, and thoroughly enjoyed the days he spent there, including meals out with colleagues in the evenings where he was still a lot of fun and a true gentleman.
Keith made an unparalleled contribution to canine ophthalmology. This impact will continue to make a difference to the health of dogs for many years to come. He will be greatly missed by many. Our thoughts and condolences are with Keith’s family and friends.
A memorial service for Keith will be held on Thursday 7th May at 2pm at St Mary’s Church, Honey Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Car parking is recommended in Cotton Lane, which is about ten minutes away from the church.

Have you ever wondered about the breeds bundled into your loveable mixed breed dog?
Now genetic science has come to the rescue with dog dna testing that will determine your best friends ancestry.DNA test or genetic dog breed testing is a relatively new opportunity to check out your dog breed dna. Is yours a mix of a bichon or a poodle or what? Dog DNA tests provide valuable information to you about your dogs origin.
There are many reasons to search out a dog breed test.
Of course, you will have a better answer to the inevitable question what kind of dog do you have? But testing satisfies more than natural curiosity about your dogs breed mix.
You may be interested to verify purebreed status of your dog. You can verify that your dog is in fact a purebred. You can certify the identity of the sire when using artificial insemination and can identify which pups belong to a particular sire in cases of multi-sire breedings. But for the mans-best-friend-family-member, the dog breed dna test will also give valuable information about your dogs health risks as some dog breeds are very prone to certain illnesses.
The canine test will give you more information about your dogs temperament and behavior, as certain breeds have their own distince behaviors. The training program you may design for your dog can be customized for your dog breed identification if you know the breed characteristics of your canine.
The dog dna origins test fills in the blanks and is a fun way to know more about your dog. More and more dog owners are requesting to determine the dnaheredity for their dogs. And why not. Puppy dog DNA testing, or for that matter, for dogs of any age, is affordable and will return answers about your dog.
Canine identification utilizes dna research from AKC recognizable breeds, returning results about your dogs breed or breeds.
Caninegenetic technology continues to evolve. Presently, testing for dogs is available in two different forms.
The first dog dna test is a home kit for dog dna breed testing. It requires the collection of cells from the cheek of your dog using a buccal or cheek swab which is provided in the home kit. The swab is sent to the lab for further analysis. At least one of the home kits provides analysis based on 100 dog breeds.
A more comprehensive dna-based mixed breed test requires a blooddraw which must be drawn at your veterinarians office. The dog dna blood test identifies more than 130 AKC-recognized breeds that may be present in mixed breed dogs. If your vet does not offer the blood test, test kits are available for you to take to your vets office if you can win approval for this with your vet.
The bottom line is that we love our dogs and knowing the dna breed mix of a mixed breed dog will not change the loving attention we shower upon our dogs. By knowing about dna testing for dogs and cost, we may be able to provide a better quality of life for our dogs. Breed reports will allow us to customize the care of our pet in the areas of temperament, diet and health.
And the next time you take your dog out in public, you will be able to answer, with confidence, that inevitable question What kind of dog is that.

So, I have been doing rescue for almost seven years now and thought I had seen everything. We've seen cases of neglect and abuse, heard every story about why your dog is no longer good enough or wanted. So I don't know why I was caught off guard by a puppy being thrown into my backyard last night. I really should have been expecting it!
Yes, thats right, someone tossed a 5ish month old male Cocker Spaniel puppy into my yard sometime between 7 and 8pm last night. I know it was someone that had dealt with me before, or how else would a 'stranger '' know where I live. I do get many people coming to my house to surrender their dogs, so its reasonable to think that it is someone that has been here for that reason before.
What I don't understand is if we helped you before when you made the phone call with the explanation when you couldn't keep a different dog, why didn't you do that this time? I am sure we were understanding and made room for your dog quickly the last time, so why the toss this time? The 'bad' thing about this, is that because you didn't sign the form, or give us any information, we have nothing to go on. We will have to start another round of shots which could make him sick, but we don't know if he's had any. He also has a great case of diarrhea because, had we made arrangements for this, we would have asked for some food that he is used to to help with the adjustments. He had a horrible night, by the way, lots of crying and howling, this too could have been kept to a minimum if you would have also tossed over a special blanket or toy of his to keep him company in the strange house. I actually did go back out into the yard last night, hoping that a bag of belongings was also there.
After having him in my house for a few hours, I can understand if you were frustrated at him, he is hyper! But we would have taken him, all his little 'issues' are related to the fact that 1)he is a Cocker Spaniel, 2) he is a puppy and 3) he needs to be neutered. By why the toss?!! And for all you reading this, it was a toss! There are no human or dog footprints within two feet of my fence, the gate is bolted shut, but there wasn't even an attempt to open it. Whoever did this also didn't lean over my fence and gently put the puppy down, all the snow on top of the fence is still there, uninterrupted. So you really did toss him, up and over my six foot fence from at least two feet away.
Anyway, he is fine, in case you were wondering. I am asking that you do give us more information on him though. You know where I live, toss a letter over the fence, reply to this blog using anonymous as your name. We really don't care who you are, we just want to do what is right for the pup and get him into a new home asap. What is his birthdate? mix breed? medical conditions? housetrained? cratetrained? been around kids? any and all information can help us adopt him out sooner.
Or call our phone line: 403-795-2599. No one answers, just leave the info there.

Separation anxiety problems are diagnosed in around 15% of all behavioural cases. When left alone, most dogs will find a familiar spot and go to sleep. However, a dog when suffering from separation anxiety may become extremely anxious. Not understanding where you or your family have gone or if you will ever return, this dog may exhibit behaviour which can include chewing, barking, salivating, urinating, defecating, vomiting or escape behaviour such as chewing through walls, scratching through doors or exit points, breaking out of cages or trying to dig their way out of gardens and enclosures.
In some cases, the dog can become extremely ill, stop eating, or suffer from depression. I often find single dogs kept in kennels can become morose or lethargic. This can be a major problem with some of our working dogs who are often kennelled and therefore do suffer accordingly. I personally believe that if you intend to kennel your dog then you really should have more than one dog in that environment.
Dogs are conspecific that means that they can generally only form a true pack with their own kind, They do create a loose pack type alliance with us and are integrated into our family unit, however that normally does not happen when dogs are not allowed indoors and are restricted to a kennelled area. These dogs do need the companionship and company of other dogs when in this situation. If we were to look at it in human terms, it would be equivalent of solitary confinement.
Possible Causes
Factors at the root of Separation Anxiety can include, genetics, insufficient early learning and handling, lack of socialisation and owner behaviour, sometimes we reinforce an overbonding relationship that causes the dog stress when we are not around. This type of dog will follow you everywhere and that includes the toilet. We can often exacerbate the problem by making a big scene when we leave. Was it Shakespeare that wrote, âparting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say good night till it be morrowâ.?
Your dog is a social, pack animal that relies on others for individual protection, it finds safety in numbers, and will feel ostracised from the pack if not allowed to mix freely with its extended family, which includes humans and other dogs. In wolf packs, an individual that is forced to leave the pack will often die if it cannot join another pack. Often these dogs are males that have been usurped from the Alpha position or have challenged for top position and failed. Making it unlikely to be accepted into another pack and will be unable to hunt as effectively on its own.
Dogs retain vestigial wolf characteristics, is it therefore any wonder they feel anxious in when placed in these situations? Dogs that lack confidence, due to over bonding, under socialisation, or lack of training in basic obedience, mistreatment in the past, long confinements or dogs that have been abandoned or placed in rescue centres are most likely to exhibit behaviours relating to separation anxiety.
Solution and Treatment
â No long goodbyes
When it is time to leave, just leave. Do not say a big and drawn out "Good bye" to your dog. In fact, ignore your dog for five minutes before you go. Paying too much attention will make your dog feel more insecure when that attention is abruptly withdrawn. You may wish to use a herbal type anxiety reducer such as Dr Bachâs rescue remedy, you can get this in any good chemist 4 drops a day in their food, and a DAP diffuser you can get this from your Vets. It plugs in the wall socket and gives out calming pheromones. DAP means Dog Appeasing Pheromone, the clever little scientists have isolated the pheromone that the nursing mother gives out to calm the little pups when she is feeding them, and have created a chemical mimic These combined can help to take the edge of the anxiety. Always discuss any herbal or natural remedies or treatment with your Vet.
â Distractions are the key
Prepare a "Good-Bye" bone. These are hollow cheese or meat filled bones purchased from the pet shop, or it could be a Kong. When it is empty, fill it with grated cheese, peanut butter, or other things your dog really likes. You can even make up a thick soup type mixture, fill the hollow bones with these and freeze, put it away and only take it out when you leave each day. Place it near your dog just before you close the door. When you arrive back home put the bone away. The bone only comes out when you leave. when it gets low then poke out the contents and refill. You are distracting your dog with something that he will find interesting enough to concentrate on and will ignore your leaving, he should appreciate the bone so much that he will look forward to it coming out instead of getting upset with your leaving. You can also get puzzle type activity cubes or balls these are meant to be filled with dried kibble or treats, the dog has to manipulate these to get bits of treat out .Some are quite difficult to use giving the dog lots to work at rather than thinking about your departure. Once again, only give this to your dog when you are leaving and take away when you return.
â Crate Train
Confining your dog during your times of absence has two positive results. First, a dog who is confined crate cannot do damage to your home. Secondly, a crate, when properly introduced, will act as a safe and comfortable den where the dog can relax. Limiting his movement also acts as an anxiety reducer for most dogs. However, dogs should not be locked in crates for long periods maximum during the day should be 2/3 hours and certainly only on rare occasions not every day.
â Exercise Your Dog
A dog that is lacking exercise is more likely to have stress and tension. Tiring a dog out with a long walk, run or with play goes a long way in reducing stress and anxiety.
â Leave the Radio On Tune a radio to a talk station; not music, put it on in a room you are often in but not in the same room as the dog, and close the door. I use LBC 97.3 as the preferred station though of course not everyone can receive this. The dog will hear the human voices from another room and may not feel so alone. Some owners tape record their own voices and play the recording rather than the radio program. Dogs know the sound of your voice. This need only be a couple of hours long.
â Build up a routine
The hardest time for dogs is immediately after you leave. Their anxious, frantic, and occasionally destructive behaviour generally happens inside the first hour. You need to modify your dog's behaviour through reinforcement training and behavioural modification. Leave your dog either in or out of the crate; get ready to leave, put your coat on or whatever routine you have when you leave, walk out as normal, come back after one minute greet your dog calmly tell him to sit, when he does, reinforce the behaviour with a food treat he enjoys.
Wait a few minutes and then repeat the exercise, this time remaining outside a few minutes longer. Continue practicing leaving and returning over the next couple of weeks, This has the effect of desensitising you dog to your exits and it will not know the length of the separation.
â Leadership is Vital
When a dog has a strong consistent leader, it has a calming effect on him. He feels safe and taken care of. In the absence of a strong leader, your dog feels obligated to assume that position in the social hierarchy of the family pack. Since a leader must control all that goes on, his inability to control you leaving causes him stress and anxiety. They sometimes exhibit dominant behaviour to try to stop owners from leaving. Obedience training and * NILIF techniques is normally the best methods of establishing yourself as a beneficial and strong leader.
Consistency is the key. You are responsible for providing food and shelter. You also have the responsibility of supplying an environment whereby the dog feels safe and secure. Leadership plays a part. lack of consistency and over-bonding can be a cause and effect of separation anxiety, though it must be said other factors may also play their part. Sometimes you may need to get another dog for company and comfort for you existing pet, especially if the symptoms are severe. Sometimes you may have to rehome the dog, as your lifestyle does not allow for a happy and contented pet and in both your best interests, this should be considered.

When searching for a new member of your family rather it be by purchase or adoption, it is best to research the certain breeds you are interested in to make sure they are a good fit for your family. For example some breeds are not good for those that live in apartments or have small yards, other breeds are to laid back for active families, others have to many health issues and families are not able to financially stay on top of the issues. The different breeds and catagories is simply a guide to help you select your new pet, they can be broken down into; Northern Breeds, Gun Dogs (or sporting group), Herding Dogs, Gaurdian Dogs, Scenthounds, Sighthounds and Pariahs, Terriers, and Companion Dogs.
Northern breeds include but not limited to: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American/Canadian Eskimo Dog, Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chow, Jindo, Keeshond, Samoyed, and Siberian Husky. These dogs are multi-purpose breeds capable of becoming hunters, herders, sled dogs, and companions. They do best in cool weather and generally prefer to work. These dogs usually get along with most dogs and love to be with people, the downfall to this breed is that if you do not occupy their time they can become escape artists and have a tendency to roam. Most of these dogs would do best placed in a home with high physical activity and hobbies.
The next breed group is the herding group, they are very popular in our area and include such dogs as: Australian cattle dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Belgian Shepherd Dog (Belian Malinois, Belgian Terveren, Belgian Sheepdog, Laekenois), Berger des Pyrenees, Border Collie, English Shepherd, German Shepherd, Giant Schnauzer, Louisiana Catahoula Leapard Dog, Old English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Shetland Sheepdog, Standard Schnauzer, and the Swedish Vallhund. The herding dogs are highly intelligent, and if they are not given a job, they will simply find their own (which you many not approve of). Many of these breeds, can become aggressive or out of sheer boredom. These dogs thrive in structured homes, firm but positive owners, and consistant training without harsh punishment. These are excellent working dogs and can be used not only to herd sheep or cattle, but agility training, police work, search and rescue, or sport trials.
The Gun Dogs or Sporting Dogs include such breeds as: American Water Spaniel, Barbet, Bracco Italiano, Brittany, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Clumber Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, English Setter, English Springer Spaniel, Epagneul Picard, French Spaniel, German Longhaired Pointer, German Shorthaired Pointer, Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter, Irish Setter, Irish Water Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Large Munsterlander, Portuguese-Water Dog, Stabyhoun, Standard Poodle, Sussex Spaniel, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Most of these dogs are excellent with the family, they love people, other dogs, and mostly they love to play! The dogs adjust well to the family lifestyle and with children as long as you stay active. Most of the dogs were orginally bred to work independently from their hunter and most have soft mouths and easygoing dispositions. However, their puppy stages can last until 3-4 years of age, and generally these breeds to not fit in to the apartment lifestyle. They have exert their energy to stay out of trouble!
The Gaurdian Dogs are bred to watch over or protect persons, property, and livestock. These breeds have been used for thousands of years, some were bred to be close to family members and friends (like the Rottweiler), others were bred to be independent and work without human influence. These dogs although large and almost lazy must not be trusted soley with small children and strangers. They were bred to gaurd and would do better in a home that has experience with the breeds and with dogs in general. The easiest way to get past these gaurdian traits is to simply socialize them as puppies with everyone and everything. These dogs generally have shorter life spans due to their size and can be very expensive to feed and and keep regular checks ups. Some examples of guardian breeds are: American Bulldog, Bernese Mountain Dog, Black Russian Terrier, Boxer, Bullmastiff, Doberman Pinscher, Dogo Argentino, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Kangal Dog, Komondor, Leonberger, Maremma Sheepdog, Mastiff, Neopolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, Tibetan Mastiff, Tosa Ken. A great sport for many of these breeds are the pulling trials, remember with a little socialization, and an understanding of their special needs these dogs can make great family pets.
The scenthound group can be quite comical, their one track mind can offer lots of laughs, great hunters, and drive the pet owner crazy with their constant howling and barking. These dogs can make great companions since they are usually very social with people and other dogs and also are good candidates for search and rescue. The sighthounds are said to be the worlds oldest dog! They are fabulous runners, many dog owners have a hard time keeping them on a leash, so keep this in mind if you are interested in this type of breed. Some examples of sighthounds are: Afghan Hound, Basenji, Borzoi, Canaan Dog, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Italian Greyhound, Pharaoh Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, and the Whippet. The terrier group has two distinct types of terriers, the traditional terrier and the bull terriers. They are known for their ability to hunt, chase, burrowing in the ground for small prey. Terriers come in many shapes and sizes, the bull terriers are a combination of the terrier and bulldog breeds, they were primarily used for dog fighting and other blood sports. The last group is Companion Dogs, they too were developed to perform a job, some killed rodents and some served as companians. Many of these dogs are miniature versions of larger breeds. Most are great house pets that get along well with other dogs, pets, and children. Some of these small breeds can develop anixiety and hostility if not socialized properly and resort to nipping. Examples of Companion Dogs are: Affenpincher, Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Boston Terrier, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, Dalmation, English Toy Spaniel, French Bulldog, Havenese, Japanese Chin, Lhasa Apso, Lowchen, Maltese, Miniture Pinscher, Papillion, Pekingese, Peruvian Inca Orchid, Pomeranian, Poodle, Pug, Schipperke, Shih Tzu, Tibetan Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier. Remember, even though most of these dog breeds are relatively small they still need structure and basic obedience in the home, too much coddling can cause serious aggression issues.
When choosing a dog it is very important to research the certain breeds you are interested in, so you and your family will have an idea of which personality traits will best fit your lifestyle and the dynamics of your home.

Perhaps you enjoy taking a drive around town to see how different lawns look. Some may have picture perfect lawns and others may not, but the look seems to be similar. Green grass is green grass, sprinkled with some trees and run-of-the-mill flowers and this can be boring. If you are seeking ways to make your yard unique, then consider adding some colorful, decorative rocks and stones to break up the monotony.
Adding landscape rocks will make your yard have style and character, others will be envious and want to copy your yard. But most do not know where to begin. The first step in adding landscaping rocks is to remove some grass. If you are not using your front lawn, this is the perfect place to start and will make your yard standout.
You can use a shovel or a tiller to break up the soil. Push the rocks out of your way and move them with a wheelbarrow. You do not want these types of rocks to remain in your landscape, they take away from the aesthetic value of your lawn.
Before you begin to dig, you need to determine if you have the proper drainage for the plants and flowers you will have. If you do not, then you need to add the appropriate drainage system before you do anything else.
Another addition that can add appeal to your front yard is a walkway. It will provide a charming path leading your guest from the driveway and to your front door. This is not only a great addition as far as appearances go, but it also keeps tracking debris into the home to a minimum as well.
If you choose a popular stone walkway, you need to stagger the rocks along the walkway leading up to your front door. Make sure that when making the final installation, that your rocks are secure and do not move, this can cause a tripping or falling hazard. Keep the rocks 4-5 inches deep in the soil to prevent them from moving. You can also add a thin layer of gravel to keep them in place and stable.
If you want to add some other interesting aspects to your walkway, consider adding curves. This look is more intricate and distinctive, but still feels informal and charming. By adding some smaller shrubbery you add structure to the walkway. You can add some color with landscape rocks and perennials, this will enhance your walkway even further.
Once you get the main flowers and foliage planted, you can begin to add some smaller ones. You can place them in an arranged pattern around and in between rocks and use them to fill in any gaps. Some people prefer to use mulch because it has a more manicured appearance. Both of them are attractive, viable options, it is just a matter of what your budget and tastes are.
Now you are ready to add the finishing touches to your landscape. You can add some climbing vines and trellis . You can hang up some plants from your front porch and put some lovely pots and planters on your front porch. You can even go for plants that will give you the look and feel of a Tuscan garden, the choice is yours. Adding some decorative rocks and lighting systems will finish up your landscape project and give you a front yard that will be the envy of the entire neighborhood.
