Lame, lame, lame.

Statins may be effective in lowering cholesterol – but at what cost?  With the high price of statin drugs and potentially undesirable side effects, many people have begun looking into supplements as an alternative to lowering cholesterol.

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, meaning they can’t be manufactured by the human body yet they are essential for good health.  Omega-3s lower triglycerides, increase HDL “good” cholesterol, and lower high blood pressure.  The American Heart Association recommends eating fish twice a week to get your omega-3s, or you can take it as a supplement.  One new study by Professor Luigi Tavazzi and Professor Gianni Tognoni, GISSI-HF Coordinating Centre, ANMCO Research Centre, Florence, Italy compared the effectiveness of taking a one-a-day capsule of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids to taking statins.  The results concluded that taking omega-3 can effectively reduce hospital admission and mortality rate for cardiovascular issues in heart failure patients.  Statins, on the other hand, proved to not have any affect in the mortality outcome of patients.

An herbal supplement called red yeast rice has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.  Red yeast rice contains lovastatin, the same active ingredient as the prescription statin drugs.  Made from a rice extract fermented with red yeast, it is shown to significantly lower LDL levels.  In a study from the July Mayo Clinic Proceedings, one test group was given prescription statin drugs with written diet and exercise guidelines.  A second group was given red yeast rice, omega-3 supplements and in-depth diet, exercise and relaxation counseling.  The findings were almost exactly the same, with a drop in LDL levels of 40 percent for each group.  Despite these results, red yeast rice may also cause similar side effects as statins due to the same active ingredient lovastatin.  Additionally, it is difficult to know the exact quality of red yeast rice because it is not closely regulated by the FDA.

While a lot of attention has been put on lowering LDL levels, research is showing that raising HDL cholesterol is just as important.  It is thought that HDL cholesterol picks up excess bad cholesterol in your blood and takes it back to your liver for disposal.  Niacin, or vitamin B-3, has long been used to increase HDL levels.  Studies show that niacin reduces LDL levels up to 20% and boosts HDL cholesterol by about 35%.  Niacin also seems to lower lipoprotein A, which is another risk factor for atherosclerosis.  Despite these benefits, niacin may cause flushing and raised blood sugar.  It should be taken under the supervision of a health care professional.

Additional supplements that may have cholesterol lowering effects include blond psyllium seed husks, artichoke leaf, soluble fiber, plant sterols, garlic, flaxseed, Metamucil and policosanol to name a few.

My daughter started taking YAZ birth control August 2007 and was starting her second year of college. Everything in her life was going well, she loved her choice of college, had a wonderful boyfriend, was excited to live in her sororiety house, had wonderful friends, and was always one of the most focused individuals I knew. She was home for the Thanksgiving holiday and the night before I was to drive her back to school, she broke down at the kitchen table and said she can't pretend anymore, that she is not happy and doesn't know what is wrong with her. I took her to the doctor and she was treated with Effexor for depression. After 4 weeks there was no change, she fell into a deeper depression and they doubled her dose of Effexor. Still no change. I started looking on the internet and found that one of the side effects of Yaz was depression. I told her to immediately stop taking it. Two days after she stopped the pill we had an appointment with a psychiatrist. I told him that this was the first day I saw some improvement and that I thought it was related to her stopping YAZ. He disregarded my statement and didn't feel that was the case. He didn't like Effexor because he said that it was "a bear to get off of". He titrated her dose down by half and introduced Wellbutrin into her system. Two days later she overdosed on pills. She couldn't bear how bad she felt. I remember it like it was yesterday, she stood in the corner of the hosital and cried, "How did I get to this point, how did this happen to me?" I knew then that it was the pills. After her release from the hosital they handed her a prescription for Lexipro. I was advised by ALL of the PROFESSIONALS that she needed to take this antidepressent because she will definitely have a relapse.
My daughter chose NOT to take any more medications. We both KNOW that it was the YAZ that started the depression and the other antidepressents just put her over the edge. It took several months to get her life back together. We pursued counselling to make sure she was equipped with good coping skills for stress before attempting to go back to school. She missed 5 weeks of school and we knew that she had alot of catching up to do and the counselling helped her get through.
It has now been almost 1 year since that incident and she is back to her old self again. NO MORE BIRTH CONTROL AND NO MORE ANTIDEPRESSANTS. I'm not against any of these medications, however, I don't feel that health care professionals equip these young girls with enough information about side effects. Depression is listed way down on the list of side effects. If her gyn would have warned her that depression was a side effect, we may have never gone down that dark frightening road and if the psychiatrist would have taken into consideration that it could have been the birth control pill things could have been different. I also work for 4 pediatricians and none of them were aware that birth control can cause depression. I am now noticing that there are mother's calling our office because their daughters are depressed and as I am looking at their charts, I see they are on birth control. I have to wonder how widespread is this epidemic and how many young woman may have been diagnosed with clinical depression when the cause could be birth control. I know that at my daughters last well visit she was asked if she was taking any medication and she said no, she didn't realize that the pill was medication. Professionals need to be more specific when asking teenagers and yound adults questions.
I hope that this helps someone else out there to understand what could be causing their depression.

One other thing you will learn on the internet is copyright, fair use, and how you can use pictures, quote text, the issue of linking to articles, the use of the old media as a source, and a ton of other things that can cause issues with you and your blog. Two resources that can help you understand the issues around copyright, linking, blogging, and staying safe in a dangerous intellectual property environment are the EFF and the Chilling Effects Clearing House.
The first resource is the EFF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation . Their section on blogging rights, responsibilities, and easy to read and understand documents will help you understand the issues that bloggers face in the USA when dealing with external parties. If you are writing a blog that covers anything on the internet at some point, you will get a takedown notice or a cease and desist notice. This is an unpleasant fact of blogging or doing near anything on the internet. The EFF viewpoint is more about knowing your rights on line, and knowing your rights around free speech. For example, when they describe section 230 of the DMCA, they point out that you are responsible for what you write, but people how comment on your blog you are not responsible for but you also have the option of what you want to do about those comments. If someone wants something removed, that is materially incorrect, that is one thing, but if the allegations are true, then you do not have to remove a comment that could be potentially damaging to a person .
The EFF also has information about how the state or people can unmask an anonymous blogger who is covering or writing about state officials or companies involved in potentially illegal activities. Companies, ISP’s, and others all have rules they need to follow when requesting the identity of a blogger or an internet user via the courts . One very good example of this is the Consumerist published “22 Confessions of a Former Dell Sales Manager ” which promptly got a Cease and Desist take down notice from Dell. The major aggregation sites and social voting sites like Digg, Slashdot, and others driving a lot of attention to the issue, which was how Dell was using the DMCA in an improper manner quickly noticed the internet including copies of the take down notice. Due to blogger outrage, and the increasingly vocal calls on the internet for Dell to stop, Dell within days admitted they were wrong, and tried to let the matter drop.
The consumerist posted the Dell response “Dell Admits Error in Asking Consumerist to Remove Post,” and the matter went away. However, this was not done without damaging Dell’s reputation, as they had to expend resources to help clean up the issue and respond to everyone who commented about it on the internet. Other big chain stores have tried to do the same thing, like Wal-Mart, which won the legal issue with the Consumerist and the material was removed .
The Chilling Effects Clearing House is another excellent source of information about what you can do about a takedown, with samples of what a takedown looks like, what you can do, and how to manage the entire take down or cease and desist process that people will send to you. One of the best examples about how this works is when someone sends you something that falls under fair use. Fair use is a loose and nebulous issue, and many people, who post things for educational purposes, or for satire, parody, or to talk about a company or their favorite NFL team can at times conflict with what is happening.
Understanding fair use, and how fair use works is an important part of understanding your rights and obligations as a blogger. One of the more interesting issues around fair use is the “Dancing Baby Video.” A mom posted a video on YouTube of a baby-dancing while in the background the “Let’s Go Crazy” song from prince was playing . The music company complained and had it taken down from YouTube. The mother sued stating that the video was “fair use ” which the courts agreed with. The idea of fair use and how you develop content around a concept or theme the more you know the better off you are. While most simply take down the file, video, picture in question, sometimes you can win a court case and seek damages for material that falls under fair use. Even professional journalists as bloggers can be involved in these kinds of issues, as one journalist learned when he was ejected from a NCAA game for blogging live from the game .
The biggest thing to remember about takedowns is that you do have rights, and it is well worth your time to know what they are. You should know about your rights and your responsibilities about what you write and how you use other people’s stuff. If you are ever in doubt, it is always wise to contact a lawyer and have them advise you on the issue.
