There is evidence that racial discrimination increases the odds that adolescents and adults will develop mental health problems, but this is the first study to examine a possible link in children of varied races, says Tumaini Coker, the study co-author and a RAND Corp. researcher and UCLA pediatrician.
It does not prove that discrimination caused the emotional problems, because unlike studies of older people, these children werent followed over time. Its possible that prejudice harms childrens mental health, but it is also possible that troubled kids prompt more discriminatory remarks from peers or that children with emotional problems perceive more bias, says study leader Mark Schuster, a Harvard pediatrician and pediatrics chief at Childrens Hospital Boston.
The link between perceived racism and mental disorders is strong, he adds. For example, Hispanics who report racism are more than three times as likely as other children to have symptoms of depression; blacks are more than twice as likely; and those of minority races have almost quadruple the odds.
Hispanics had the worst mental health effects, the study shows; perceptions of bias significantly increased their symptoms of all four disorders. About four out of five Hispanic children who felt prejudice had foreign-born parents. Black parents may buffer their children better, perhaps preparing them to expect some racism, Schuster speculates.
The study asked students whether they experienced racism, and that raises a question, says Rebecca Bigler, a University of Texas psychologist. In other research, children who report racism consistently say it rarely happens, she says. We dont know if it was a rare occurrence with these kids. Maybe it only has to happen once to be devastating if youre young.

The link may exist, said the researchers, because these individuals are genetically predisposed to develop depression when triggered by the effects of alcohol.
Research also suggests that the depressant characteristics of alcohol may lead to periods of depressed mood in those who abuse alcohol, according to the authors.

Escitalopram (Lexapro by Forest Laboratories in the United States and elsewhere by Lundbeck as Cipralex, Sipralexa, Seroplex and also as Lexapro) is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. It is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder; other indications include social anxiety disorder, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Escitalopram is the S-stereoisomer (enantiomer) of the earlier Lundbeck drug citalopram (Celexa), hence the name escitalopram. Escitalopram is noted for its high selectivity of serotonin reuptake inhibition and as a result has fewer side effects not related to its serotonergic activity. Escitalopram acts by increasing intrasynaptic levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter into the neuron. Of the SSRIs currently on the market escitalopram has the highest affinity for the human serotonin transporter (SERT). Another enantiomer of citalopram (R-citalopram) counteracts to a certain degree the serotonin-enhancing action of escitalopram. As a result, escitalopram is a more potent antidepressant than citalopram, which is a mixture of escitalopram and R-citalopram. In order to explain this phenomenon, researchers from Lundbeck proposed that escitalopram enhances its own binding via an additional interaction with another allosteric site on the transporter. Further research by the same group showed that R-citalopram also enhances binding of escitalopram, and therefore the allosteric interaction cannot explain the observed counteracting effect. In the most recent paper, however, the same authors again reversed their findings and reported that R-citalopram decreases binding of escitalopram to the transporter. Although allosteric binding of escitalopram to the serotonin transporter is of unquestionable research interest, its clinical relevance is unclear since the binding of escitalopram to the allosteric site is at least 1000 times weaker than to the primary binding site.
In vitro studies using human liver microsomes indicated that CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 are the primary isozymes involved in the N-demethylation of escitalopram.

A few weeks ago, my pharmacy received a fax from our wholesaler telling us that generic Effexor XR was now available. Taken to treat depression, Effexor XR (venlfaxine extended-release) is heavily prescribed and very expensive (about $120-$450/month, depending on the dose). Staying on the cutting edge of generic availability helps me to save people a lot of coin, and that new generic had me very excited. As I looked into this more closely, however, I noticed something. Effexor XR is a capsule . . . and this new product was a tablet.
In greater states, generic versions of medications have to be the same dosage framework as the brand name drug. This new product wasnt really a generic version of Effexor XR because it wasnt a capsule. So if that wasnt generic Effexor XR, what exactly was it? And thats where it gets really confusing. This product is, in fact, a brand autonym drug . . . without a type sobriquet. Upstate Pharma LLC, the drug company distributing these tablets, has chosen to simply use the generic name of the drug, venlfaxine extended-release for this medication. By convention, brand autonym drugs are usually addicted an actual make name. They arent referred to by their generic place name unless theyre actually generic. It seems fairly obvious to me that Upstate is banking on mass confusion among pharmacists, doctors, patients, and anyone else to help market this product.
That is all very confusing. Even I was confused by this at first. If you take Effexor XR, here are the main points you need to know about these new tablets:
These tablets are NOT generic Effexor XR. Theyre just another brand nomen, extended-release venlafaxine product.At about 80% the cost, these tablets ARE less expensive than Effexor XR. However, unlike a true generic, dont expect these tablets to drop in price over the upcoming months.In contradiction to Effexor XR, which only goes up to a 150mg capsule, these new tablets are also procurable in a 225mg dose. This new dose is much more affordable than taking either A) both a 150mg and a 75mg capsule of Effexor XR or B) five 75mg capsules of Effexor XR.If you have insurance with flat copays, dont hope for a generic copay for these tablets. Of course, this will vary among insurance plans, but all of the plans Ive seen have actually charged HIGHER copays for these tablets (alike though they have an overall lower cost).If you have insurance with percentage or full copays, these tablets will save you money because their overall is cost is lower than Effexor XRs .If you dont have insurance, these tablets can save you money as well.If you take Effexor XR, there are literally several supplementary ways to cut your drug costs lots more than with these new tablets, regardless of whether or not you have prescription insurance.

This product is, in fact, a brand autonym drug . . . without a type sobriquet. Upstate Pharma LLC, the drug company distributing these tablets, has chosen to simply use the generic name of the drug, venlfaxine extended-release for this medication. By convention, brand autonym drugs are usually addicted an actual make name. They arent referred to by their generic place name unless theyre actually generic. It seems fairly obvious to me that Upstate is banking on mass confusion among pharmacists, doctors, patients, and anyone else to help market this product.

A new study in the February issue of the Journal of Development Behavioral Pediatrics reports that an Internet program helps to reduce depression symptoms and prevents future episodes of depression in teens.
The program, called "Project CATCH-IT," uses proven methods, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavioral activation and interpersonal therapy, to teach the teens to change their behavior and to learn better coping skills. It includes a series of 14 modules that the teens can work through online through a secure website.
The researchers tested the program in 83 teens and young adults who were considered to be at risk for depression. The patients were randomly assigned to undergo either a brief discussion about depression with a doctor or a longer "motivational interview." Both groups were then given the Internet address for Project CATCH-IT.
Most of the teens in the study opted to visit the website, which was found to be effective in preventing future episodes of the depression. Based on a standard score, the percentage of patients with "clinically significant" depression decreased from 50% at the start of the study to no more than 15% at the three months follow-up.
The researchers hypothesized that the teens who had received the motivational interview might do better than those who had only talked briefly with a doctor, but overall depression scores were similar for both groups. Those who had received the motivational interview did do better in certain areas, however, such as having fewer thoughts of self-harm and hopelessness. Patients who received the motivational interview also spent more time using the website, which may have contributed to their additional improvements.
Study author Dr. Benjamin W. Van Voorhees of the University of Chicago suggests that Internet-based programs like Project CATCH-IT "may offer a low-cost way to implement depression prevention in community settings."

Wyeth, the maker of Effexor or venlafaxine HCI, and the FDA had reports of overdoses occurring in some patients, mostly in combination with alcohol or other drugs, the agency said in a statement.
Health care professionals are advised to prescribe Effexor and Effexor XR in the smallest quantity of capsules consistent with good patient management to reduce the risk of overdose, the FDA said.
The reported overdoses resulted in death or symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, coma, seizures, vomiting and vertigo, Wyeth said in a letter it sent to doctors and health care providers.
Epidemiological studies have shown that venlafaxine-treated patients have a higher pre-existing burden of suicide risk factors than SSRI-treated patients, the Wyeth letter said.
SSRIs selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are another class of antidepressants that include such drugs as Celexa, Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft.
The letter did not disclose how many overdose cases had been reported. It urged doctors to report any adverse reactions to Effexor to the company or to the FDA.

Back when I moved to Asheville (about seven years ago) there was only one Thai restaurant in the area: Wan Pen out in Arden. My first house was only a five minute drive from Wan Pen, so I ate there frequently. Wan Pen has an authentic, delicious menu, but once I moved into Asheville, it was too far away to visit with any regularity. Soon Doc Chey's Noodle House opened up downtown, with several Thai dishes on the menu, and while I like their menu and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, it's not truly a Thai restaurant. When you get down to it, this is an Asian fusion restaurant (or, as the chain's website states, "Pan Asian Cuisine"). This fact makes me and my friends wonder why Doc Chey's consistently gets in the top three Thai restaurants in the Best of WNC. We understand "Best Cheap Lunch", and even "Best Takeout" (although it's not really a takeout joint, either), but "Best Thai"?

Next in the Asheville area's quest for abundant Thai food came Thai Cuisine Express on Patton Avenue. And this, for me, at least, was the end of the quest. Thai Cuisine Express is now in its fourth year in business, and as far as I'm concerned, this is the best Thai food in Asheville. It also happens to be one of the cheapest.

Other Thai restaurants have opened since. Maybe too many, in fact. There's Thai Basil, Noi's Thai Kitchen, and a slew of other Thai places in the area. Most of them, in my opinion, rely on their swanky atmospheres more than their menus to draw patronage. In large part, they are overpriced and lack authenticity (read: Americanized). But Thai Cuisine Express continues to serve up spicy coconut curries and tangy stir-fries in large portions to satisfy your craving for the true taste of Thai. For a mere $8.95, you can get a heaping helping of the most delicious cashew chicken in town (maybe in the whole USA; owner Palm Thonesuwan brought Thai Cuisine's menu all the way from Hollywood, where he helped open a Thai restaurant/bar that has earned international acclaim for its menu). Also available are such Thai staples as Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and Thai Basil. Anything on the menu can be made vegetarian or vegan (just remember to request it without fish sauce!), and I promise you won't find a better spring roll in these mountains.

This is a true family restaurant- and the customers tend to quickly become extended family members. Palm is always there (he's not only the owner, he's also the restaurant's only chef) to wave and say hi, or "Sa-ba-di-kah!", if you speak a little Thai. The atmosphere is snug and casual, and with only five tables, a diner often finds herself participating in the next table's conversation. Most of the business is done in takeout orders, and this is a great option if you don't have time to cook dinner, especially if you live on the west side. So if you're in the mood for incredible, delicious, authentic Thai food, but not in the mood to pay extra for a formal, fancy atmosphere, head on down to Thai Cuisine Express!
