"I became very interested in proton beam therapy during my residency in radiotherapy in the 1960s when I saw the devastating side effects that untargeted radiotherapy has on cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment," said Dr. Slater. "I realized that this problem could be minimized if normal-tissue exposure to radiation was reduced."
After receiving a National Institutes of Health fellowship to study radiation therapy at the University of Texas's Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in the late 1960's, Dr. Slater used his physics background to develop several devices to deliver more targeted therapies. But it wasn't until the 1970s when he was appointed director of the Radiotherapy Section of the Department of Radiation Sciences at LLUMC that Dr. Slater began investigating proton therapy and computed tomography (CT). By the early 1980s, further development of CT and MRI in the medical world, combined with increased computing capabilities, made development of a hospital-based proton treatment system feasible.
In 1984, Dr. Slater started dedicated work toward developing a variable-energy proton delivery system that would be hospital-based, safe, dependable and easily upgradeable. With the scientific backing of Proton Therapy Co-Operative Group, as well as cooperation from the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to build the world's smallest proton synchrotron to deliver a beam of energy to reach deep tumors in patients, Dr. Slater gained the backing of LLU to develop the Proton Treatment Center.

What do we know about lung cancer?

Almost every person I ask replies that it is because of smoking. Those very people are smokers.
Funny, right? They know that smoking causes cancer, but how come they dont stop smoking?
Everything around us tells us to quit smoking. TV commercials are being aired that smoking is bad for your health and leads to cancer. Books and magazines have articles on what will happen if you smoke. But do we see a change? Do people stop smoking?
Of course not. It is the very nature of human beings to stop things that they themselves know is bad only when they feel something unusual with their bodies. For example, a man who has smoked for 20 years will only stop when he has difficulty breathing or he experiences chest pains and his cough does not ceases.
Why do people smoke? Some claim it to be their habit or just to pass the time or release tensions. For others, peer pressure is their answer. They want to be cool or be part of a crowd through smoking.
For those thinking about smoking Don’t even think about it. Smoking is bad for your health. For more information, you can research about smoking and its effects online or just simply read articles in the magazines or in books. As I have said, everything around us tells us to stop smoking because it is bad for your health.
For those kids who are being pressured to smoke, find other friends. Friends who will not push you into doing things that is dangerous to your health and well being. Because years from now, those people who thick that smoking is cool will be suffering from various respiratory diseases and worst of them all is lung cancer.
So think about it. Kick the bad habit and start living healthy before you regret it.

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/schizophrenia/index.shtml) has implicated machinery that maintains the flow of potassium in cells and revealed a potential molecular target for new treatments. Expression of a previously unknown form of a key such potassium channel was found to be 2.5 fold higher than normal in the brain memory hub of people with the chronic mental illness and linked to a hotspot of genetic variation.
An extensive series of experiments suggest that selectively inhibiting this suspect form could help correct disorganized brain activity in schizophrenia - without risk of cardiac side effects associated with some existing antipsychotic medications. Scientists at the National Institutes of Health and European colleagues report on threads of converging evidence in the May, 2009 issue of the journal Nature Medicine.
The end game in linking genes with complex disorders like schizophrenia requires that we not only demonstrate statistical association, but also show how a gene version acts biologically to confer risk, explained Daniel Weinberger, M.D., director of National Institute of Mental Healths (NIMH) Genes Cognition and Psychosis Program, who led the research. We found schizophrenia-like effects in brain circuitry and mental processing in perfectly healthy people who carry the risk-associated version of this potassium channel gene, even though they dont show any psychotic behavior.
Evidence suggests that schizophrenia stems from complex interactions between multiple genes and environmental factors. Several candidate genes have recently been statistically linked to the illness in large genome-wide association studies.
Our study goes further, spanning discovery of a new gene variant, confirmation of its association with the illness, and multi-level probes into how it works - in human post mortem brain tissue, the living human brain, and neurons, added Weinberger.
By regulating the flow of potassium ions into the cell, potassium channels control when neurons fire - electrically discharge and release a chemical messenger that signals neighboring neurons in a circuit. This flow is regulated, in part, by activity of the chemical messenger dopamine, the main target of antipsychotic medications used to treat schizophrenia.
One type of potassium channel, called KCNH2, attracted the researchers interest for its potential role in sustaining the type of neuronal firing that supports the higher mental functions disturbed in schizophrenia. Spurred by hints from postmortem studies of genetic variation linked to schizophrenia in the genomic neighborhood of KCNH2, the researchers analyzed the genes association with the illness in 5 independent samples comprising hundreds of families.

People of all ages, both male and female, benefit from regular physical activity. Significant health benefits can be obtained by including a moderate amount of physical activity (e.g., 30 minutes of brisk walking or raking leaves, 15 minutes of running, or 45 minutes of playing volleyball) on most, if not all, days of the week. Through a modest increase in daily activity, most people can improve their health and quality of life. Physical activity reduces the risk of premature mortality in general, and of coronary heart disease, hypertension, colon cancer, and diabetes mellitus in particular. Physical activity also improves mental health and is important for the health of muscles, bones, and joints. This category contains topics on cardio exercises and weightlifting, spiritual exercises like yoga and tai chi, outdoor activities like running, cycling, skiing, so take your pick.

San Diego and Imperial Counties both received F grades for ozone pollution and for peak (24-hour) particle pollution in the 10th annual American Lung Association State of the Air 2009 report released today. On the list of the nations 25 worst-polluted cities, San Diego ranked 13th in ozone and 23rd in peak particle pollution. El Centro ranked 10th for ozone pollution.

Achieving and maintaining healthy air must be a public health priority, and we cannot relent on our work as a state and as individuals to keep our air clean, said Tony Gerber, MD, PhD, a volunteer with the American Lung Association in California and a pulmonary specialist and assistant professor at the University of California. Although there are some improvements, the significant number of failing grades for ozone and particle pollution means that the health and lives of millions of Californians are at risk because of our dirty air.Now is the time to be more reliant on cleaner, low carbon fuels for transportation and power generation, such as electricity powered by solar and wind, and vehicles that are natural gas, battery electric and plug-in electric hybrids, and to finally move away from diesel, gasoline and coal said Trisha Murakawa, board chair with the American Lung Association in California. The California Air Resources Boards adoption of the first-ever low carbon fuel standard last week is a giant step forward to achieve these goals and free the state from its petroleum addiction.

Local governments must commit to strong measures to reduce vehicle emissions such as land use decisions that promote more compact development patterns and integrate transit and other alternatives to private vehicle use. The state must support local government efforts to reduce driving in every way possible, especially by providing needed funding for transit operations and improved planning.

Improving air quality benefits by strengthening the Smog Check program is another way to achieve healthier air. The American Lung Association in California is sponsoring SB 435 (Pavley) to require motorcycles, that emit 10 times more pollution per vehicle than cars, to get a biennial smog check.

With the documented health risks, it is unacceptable that we still have thousands of old diesel buses and trucks transporting our children, food and products throughout our communities, said Murakawa. Effective implementation of the statewide truck and bus regulation, a measure strongly supported by the American Lung Association, will help address this problem. We have massive smoggy super-highway ports beginning in California and linking with roadways to the rest of the country and it is crucial that the ports take action to quickly reduce diesel pollution and that the International Maritime Organization allow the United States to require cleaner ocean-going vessels. Because of the ports, Californians bear the brunt of delivery pollution for goods going to the rest of the country.

The State of the Air report includes a national air quality report card that assigns A-F grades to counties across the country and ranks cities and counties most affected by the most widespread types of pollution; ozone (or smog) and particle pollution. The report also details trends for the 25 most polluted cities. Grades for the 1,000 counties with air pollution monitors can be found by entering a zip code at www.stateoftheair.org.

Elsewhere in California, Kern County ranked as having the worst annual particle pollution levels nationwide, as did San Bernardino County for ozone pollution. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside metro area ranked as the worst ozone-polluted metro area and Bakersfield received the top ranking for the most year-round particle pollution.

This year, 12 more California counties received failing grades than last year, reflecting the tighter national ozone standard implemented in 2008. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside metro area demonstrates a continued and notable improvement trend for annual particle pollution levels (dropping to number three on that most-polluted list nationwide), based on State of the Air report grades during the past decade, although particle pollution levels remain unhealthy.

Recently I read a report titled "Women and Smoking" published by The Non Smokers' Movement of Australia, it mentioned:
"While the prevalence of smoking amongst women is still below that for males, the difference between the two groups has considerably narrowed in recent years. This is because men's smoking rates have declined by more than 50% since 1945 (down from 72% to the present rate of 32.1%). Female smokers, on the other hand, appear to have been less influenced by anti-smoking messages."
Among the factors quoted in the report which have an impact on women smoking are marital status, employment status, occupational status and the relationship between the level of education attained.
However, from a non smoker perspective of whom I am, I believe there are definitely other factors at play, two that I can think of, one is attributed to "Advertising" and the other is "Men".
The reason I am on this opinion is that women smoke because of the way cigarettes are advertised and where they are shown. Women smoke is also because they believe smoking will make them act, look, and feel differently.
You will notice cigarette ads when targeted towards women always promote slimness. And if I am not mistaken, six years after Virgina Slims were introduced, twice as many women were seen smoking. There this kind of cigarette ads will make women think that by smoking, they can become thin, sexy and healthy. Further all smoking ads are set in places with clean, wholesome settings, can you find any ads show people with stained teeth, wrinkled faces, and a large cloud of smoke hovering over heads?
The other reason why I feel is attributed to men is because cigarettes have always been attributed to class and intellect associated with men which men use to portray strength. Hence, the phenomenon of fairer sex in a way has not shy women away from smoking, as women also deem this as a perfect portrayal of women's attitude and strength. For example, cigarettes, also known as the stress sticks, are no longer the domain of the male.
The answer to whether advertising or men is the culprit and which one the more dominant factor, i.e. "The Culprit on Women Smoking", I would say is subject to much debate and further survey, right?
What is needed now is to curb the epidemic of smoking and its related diseases throughout the world. Some measures which could be taken include:
1. Increase awareness of the impact of smoking on women's health - The media, broadcast authority and women's magazines should play an important role in raising women's awareness of the magnitude of the impact of smoking on their health. For instance, women have to aware that lung cancer is not the only concern, others ensuing such as cardiovascular, health effects on pregnancy, pulmonary, and other life threatening diseases as well.
2. Increase the awareness to counter the tobacco industry's targeting of women - Get women aware that tobacco industry's sponsorship of women's activities such as in sports, in professional and leadership organizations, its support to curb domestic violence against women, and so on is actually an attempt to associate itself with things women most value. Such associations should be decried for what they are, i.e. attempts to position itself as an ally of women's causes and thereby to silence potential critics.
3. Recognize that nonsmoking is by far the norm among women - The fact that almost all women have either rejected smoking for themselves or, if they do smoke now, wish to quit, should be promoted aggressively through various means, one of them could be a more vocal constituency related to women and smoking.
4. Encourage the reporting of gender-specific results from studies of factors influencing smoking behavior, smoking prevention and cessation, and the health effects of tobacco use. This reporting will provide additional evidence to help women aware as well as suggest important gender differences exist in the appeal and use of such products, and the health consequences of their use. In a way this will help women to better understand the disparities in smoking prevalence among different groups and sexes, further defined by socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. In short, it helps to tackle issues such as how can the decline in smoking among women who are less well educated be accelerated, how to disassociate cigarette smoking from progress in achieving gender equity and so on.
5. To arrest the smoking prevalence among women - What is already known about effective means of tobacco control at the societal level should be disseminated throughout the world as soon as possible to prevent the increase in the level of smoking among women worldwide.
6. Encourage and make aware of the importance to support and participate in the World Health Organization's Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC) to government of every country - That FCTC is an international legal instrument designed to curb the global spread of tobacco use through specific protocols, which cover tobacco pricing, smuggling, advertising and sponsorship, and many other related activities.

Providing cancer care for a loved with lung cancer can be draining both emotionally and physically. Many people who are providing lung cancer care are so busy and concerned with their loved one that they forget to care for themselves. In fact, some research shows that caregivers are at greater risk of having such health problems as infection or depression than those who are not caregivers.
Caring for yourself while you provide lung cancer care is important. Not only will you benefit, but you will also be able to provide higher-quality cancer care for your loved one for a longer period of time.
"Maintaining your own well-being is going to help you be a better caregiver," says Julie Walther Scheibel, MEd, a counselor at Concordia Seminary Counseling and Resource Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Cancer Care: Tend to Your Own Health
You should always practice good health habits, but it is particularly important to avoid neglecting your health when you are caring for a loved one with lung cancer.

Aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular events: an update of the evidence for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
Ann Intern Med. 2009 Mar 17;150(6):405-10
Authors: Wolff T, Miller T, Ko S
BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease are leading causes of death in the United States. In 2002, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) strongly recommended that clinicians discuss aspirin with adults who are at increased risk for coronary heart disease. PURPOSE: To determine the benefits and harms of taking aspirin for the primary prevention of myocardial infarctions, strokes, and death. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE and Cochrane Library (search dates, 1 January 2001 to 28 August 2008), recent systematic reviews, reference lists of retrieved articles, and suggestions from experts. STUDY SELECTION: English-language randomized, controlled trials (RCTs); case-control studies; meta-analyses; and systematic reviews of aspirin versus control for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) were selected to answer the following questions: Does aspirin decrease coronary heart events, strokes, death from coronary heart events or stroke, or all-cause mortality in adults without known CVD? Does aspirin increase gastrointestinal bleeding or hemorrhagic strokes? DATA EXTRACTION: All studies were reviewed, abstracted, and rated for quality by using predefined USPSTF criteria. DATA SYNTHESIS: New evidence from 1 good-quality RCT, 1 good-quality meta-analysis, and 2 fair-quality subanalyses of RCTs demonstrates that aspirin use reduces the number of CVD events in patients without known CVD. Men in these studies experienced fewer myocardial infarctions and women experienced fewer ischemic strokes. Aspirin does not seem to affect CVD mortality or all-cause mortality in either men or women. The use of aspirin for primary prevention increases the risk for major bleeding events, primarily gastrointestinal bleeding events, in both men and women. Men have an increased risk for hemorrhagic strokes with aspirin use. A new RCT and meta-analysis suggest that the risk for hemorrhagic strokes in women is not statistically significantly increased. LIMITATIONS: New evidence on aspirin for the primary prevention of CVD is limited. The dose of aspirin used in the RCTs varied, which prevented the estimation of the most appropriate dose for primary prevention. Several of the RCTs were conducted within populations of health professionals, which potentially limits generalizability. CONCLUSION: Aspirin reduces the risk for myocardial infarction in men and strokes in women. Aspirin use increases the risk for serious bleeding events.

A Tigard middle school teacher refuses to let cancer get in between her and her students

Fowler Middle School teacher Susan McCormick sat in her sixth-grade classroom for the first time in a long time Friday, looking up at her whiteboard. Nearly all of her 120 students had made a pilgrimage to her whiteboard over the past few months to scribble notes in dry-erase marker saying they missed her, wishing her well, or writing in big blue letters Go Dodgers one of her favorite baseball teams.

These kids are my medicine, McCormick sighed, looking up at what she calls her wall of support with a smile and wet eyes.

Her other medicine is chemotherapy and radiation to treat her two cancers doctors found last year. Diagnosed with stage-three lung cancer in October and then with pancreatic cancer just weeks later during a PET scan, McCormick has lost her hair, her physical strength and months of seeing her students but refuses to lose her will to live.

Currently, Im a cancer patient, but you can refer to me as a cancer survivor, McCormick said.
