The World Health Organization is raising its pandemic alert to phase 6, the top level on its six-point scale, to indicate a flu pandemic is under way, WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan said on Thursday, June 11, 2009.

Abortion is one of those topics that just won't go away. It's a favorite rallying cry for the right-wing, along with guns and gays. It's so odd that the corporate elite are stealing the savings, wages, pensions, benefits, holidays, vacation, sick time, healthcare, public education, jobs, hope, future from working people in this country, yet the Republicans are still able to convince at least 20% of the people that their "real" concern should be whether some woman they never met can terminate a pregnancy based on reasons and grounds unknown to them. It's astonishing how easily some people can be manipulated.

Here's the basic truth about abortion: it's a tough issue. Nobody is really going to support the abortion of a 8.5 month old fetus unless the mother is going to die without the abortion. Most rational people would not object to the abortion of a 1-week old fetus. The real dispute comes with everything in-between.

Some people see this only in personal and emotional terms: "I could never have aborted my children. It would have been like killing my children." Other people see it only in impersonal and unemotional terms. Some people see it in religious terms: thou shalt not kill (although they often don't seem to apply that to war or the death penalty).

Everybody's entitled to have their own opinion and to make their own decision about how they would proceed if they were ever in a situation in which they considered having an abortion. Nobody has suggested forced abortions, for example. It should be a personal decision.

What is the legal underpinning to this ridiculous national neverending argument? It's much slimmer than most people realize.

The federal government has extremely limited authority. The Constitution is clear in listing the specific areas in which the federal government is given any authority. For example, the federal government is directed to build and maintain a road (highway) system to connect the states, to create and maintain a postal system, to provide for the common defense against foreign invaders, to enter into treaties with other nations. But there is nothing in the constitution that would give the federal government the authority to ban abortion. So that's an important starting point.

If the federal government has no authority to ban abortion, the question then is whether any State has the authority to ban abortion. The generally accepted view is that the States may regulate and control the provision of healthcare services, as part of the general health and safety responsibility of state government. So, for example, they can require that only medically-trained people can provide abortions. They can require that abortions must be performed in a medical clinic, and not in people's homes, if there are sufficient health and safety reasons to support that requirement.

But what would be the legal grounds for any state or for the federal government to outright ban abortion? That's always been the question.

Women have the right, as citizens, to control their own bodies, which should include the ability to abort a fetus. Women do not "belong" to men, so men (even the biological father) have no ability or legal right to enslave women, tie them down, force them to bear an unwanted child. So it seems clear that the decision belongs solely to the woman, a citizen of this nation who has the natural-right to control her own body.

If the state does not have any obvious legal grounds to prohibit abortion, and the biological father cannot, then who has "standing" to go into court and protest the abortion?

What the right-wing has tried to argue is that a fetus is a "Person" under our Constitution. If a fetus is a "Person," the right-wing argues, then each "Person" is entitled to [Equal] protection by the federal and state government. The fetus, through a legal representative, could petition the court to "protect" it against abortion. That's the theory upon which they have pinned their hopes.

Some states have passed laws saying that if a pregnant woman is murdered, that is a double-homicide. This is primarily intended to serve as a stepping stone to banning abortions. Each time such a new law is passed, saying that assaulting a pregnant woman is a double-assault, for example, it always turns out the backers of the law are the right-wing religious groups whose true goal is to provide a legal underpinning for their ultimate objective of getting a court to rule that a fetus is a Person for all purposes.

But the fact is that the Constitution never in any way acknowledged, considered, or recognized a fetus as a Person, or as anything else. There is nothing in the Constitution (federal or any state) that recognizes any rights at all in a fetus. That is because everybody who is not ideologically blind understands the word "Person" means a born human being, not an un-born human. Fetuses abort all the time, miscarry, are lost, for many reasons, so whether the fetus will or will not ever become a "Person" is uncertain until birth.

If a fetus was a Person, for example, then the Constitution would include the fetus in the count of the population (census) which is used to determine how many Representatives will be allocated to each state. But there is no such mention of a fetus, and for good reason. A fetus is a potential Person and nothing more. In our Constitution, a fetus is not entitled to legal recognition as a "Person" until it is born.

The Supreme Court in Roe vs. Wade used a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 analysis. During the first 1/3 of a pregnancy, women are free to have abortions, and nobody should interfere. During the second 1/3, there are sufficient medical implications that a state can require, for example, that it be performed only under medically-appropriate conditions (not in a home, for example). During the last 1/3 of the pregnancy, the Supreme Court held that a fetus is "viable," meaning it theoretically could live outside the mother, and that is close enough for it to be considered entitled to protection, so a state can ban what are called late-term abortions.

But what about if the mother's life is in danger, and it's late-term? Who gets to decide? Seven-month pregnant woman who will likely die unless the pregnancy is aborted? For example, her blood pressure sky-rockets and she is at high risk of stroke or death. Who decides? Does the act of getting pregnant make women incompetent, or mean their rights as human beings should be taken away, given over to the government?

How could the government be given the right to condemn women to death if, for example, they start bleeding, and the only way to save their life is to abort the pregnancy? Should the government have the authority to rule that all women in those circumstances must be left to die, that no medical person can help them, stop the bleeding, save their lives, if it would abort the pregnancy? This debate is fundamentally about whether the state has the right to order all women be left to die in a problem late term pregnancy.

Of course feminists believe the anti-abortion rant has nothing to do with pregnancy, and everything to do with the rage of the religious-right who want to punish women for leaving the kitchen and using birth control to decide when to get pregnant, and how many children to have.

Much of the anti-abortion movement is populated by people who have a sincere belief that abortion is murder, and they are entitled to their belief. But much of the anti-abortion movement, and I would say the leaders, are simply men who are in a rage against independent women, and the door-mat women who are trying to get acceptance, protection, maybe even love, from these fanatical men who advocate killing any woman who supports abortion. Richie, I haven’t read your part of the actual post, but the comment you left above is amazing - it’s kind of like a mirror of BL’s talent; meaning, to be able to put SO MUCH into so few words! Deana struck a big nerve with me - that part when people from places with socialized medicine tell us how great it is because it’s free, and that we should have it for free too, always cracks me up. I knew a Swedish woman (oh, she was obnoxious) who used to love to tout what a wonderful economy they had there, and how morally superior they were as a people because all their medical care was “free” and in fact their society was so free and un-greedy that if a stranger wanted to sleep for the night in someone else’s backyard, it was just customary that you let them do so. Even if they didn’t ask first. (Which sounds like trespassing and a dangerous practice, but hey, they’re all just good and non-dangerous and so forth.) Anyway, point was that I kept explaining to her that the word “FREE” did not mean what she thinks it means. I kept asking her what she thought free meant, and her concept of it was so shallow that she really thought it meant that one didn’t have to pay for it.
Look, when I was 15 years old, that’s what I thought it meant too. But when you’re a 40-something year old woman who claims to be a PhD and you don’t understand what “free” means even when someone explains it to you, there’s a problem.
Now, I am coming to a point here, please bear with me. I’m going to do it in a roundabout way. If it’s too long and boring, I won’t be insulted if you skip it; fair warning that I’m long-winded tonight.
Ok, let me start with Patch Adams. Has anyone seen that movie? Because Patch Adams had this dream of a new style of medicine (and I found it pretty gross that even though his idea got his dear friend murdered he still thought it was good, but that’s an aside). Clearly he was an intelligent man and a talented doctor; no argument there. But when he wanted to practice his style of medicine, he and his friends had to raid the supplies of a nearby “stodgy” hospital - the kind that was hampered by the necessity of, you know, PAYING for the stuff they used to help the sick people. In other words, they STOLE the stuff and then called it “free.” And this was supposed to be a good thing. See, if you do it for a good reason, it doesn’t matter what the unintended consequences are (such as, say, the hospital losing expensive supplies that they had bought and thus needing to cover their losses, probably by being horribly mean and charging even more for their services). It was all very light-hearted, and one of those fun “bonding” experiences going into the hospital and stealing stuff for their own patients. It made them the good guys, because they were doing it to help people for free. But it wasn’t free. There are people working for low wages in the places that MAKE those cotton balls and bottle that rubbing alcohol and ship it and drive the trucks that deliver it, and they have to be paid. There are people who harvest the cotton and people who grow it and people who chop down the trees to make the tongue depressors. There are all these millions of people involved in doing the WORK to get those supplies to that hospital.
There are doctors who spend many years in school studying very difficult subjects and sacrificing years of their lives who either have to have rich families, or take out massive student loans which later have to be repaid, then further years working as residents with scant sleep and a very demanding physical and mental task. There are nurses who spend years studying as well, then spend their own years dealing with rowdy drunks who end up in the ER after fights and sometimes get combative, who barely have time to eat and spend countless hours on their feet and putting people on bedpans. There are orderlies who have to do a buttload of heavy work.
Do these people not deserve the money they earn? All of them, from the cotton pickers to the surgeons? What right does anyone have to steal the fruits of their labor or to demand that they shouldn’t receive their salaries? Where does anyone get the idea that just because they themselves might not have to pay for any of it that that means it is FREE? None of it is free.
To socialize it only means to shift the cost somewhere else and add an entirely new level of bureaucracy in order to administrate it, which means that it costs that much more to pay the people who do THAT part of it. Which is, on its surface, a net loss. If you can still find an elderly doctor, the kind who used to hang out a shingle (I have one myself, and it’s a rare treasure) they will tell you that before costs started going through the roof with the first bureaucracy (insurance, and later the worse HMOs) it was little to no trouble to treat most patients at a reasonable rate and have more than enough to treat poorer patients at a reduced rate or for free. But with each new bureaucracy and each resulting increase in COSTS, it became more and more difficult to keep treating people for free or on the cheap, and thus more people ended up *needing* more help, and more bureaucracies and more cost increases, in a vicious cycle.
But what galls me the most about all this occurring and spiraling ever downward is that all these horrible things - that dirty dirty word - that whole **profit** thing, was what went into research and development! The more money the medical profession made and was allowed to actually keep and use, the more nifty new things they could INVENT and learn about. Profit, in the medical profession, translated into BETTER medical care, better machines, new and better treatments, new and better medicines, more help for people to live healthier and more enjoyable lives. But all our entitled people can see is that some of those guys drive a fucking Porsche and dammit, I don’t have one, so why should he? Well, why SHOULDN’T he? Haven’t they helped make things better for us all? It’s the same with everyone being mad at CEOs for getting big bonuses (I’m not talking about AIG here; this has been an issue way before bailouts, which are a different animal.) Everyone wants to bite the hand that feeds them because that hand has a pretty ring on it. Prettier than mine, thus bad.
So the long and short of it is, you socialize the health care further and further, eventually completely, and medical progress comes to a grinding HALT. Doesn’t this bother anyone? Do we think there is no further progress coming? Because human ingenuity, combined with the means, derived from profits, can make amazing progress and can KEEP making progress. What the hell good is free health care for everyone if they’re never going to find a cure or invent a decent machine to even diagnose what’s ailing you? It sounds good now because we HAVE already made so much progress and we think it’s good enough where it is - but it can be better, and why shouldn’t it be? Why shouldn’t it be ALLOWED to become even better as we go? I know they spend a lot of it on bullshit like Viagra and baldness cures, but that’s because there’s a demand for these things, and it isn’t stopping anyone from seeking better treatments for cancer. If they make more money on Viagra and baldness, they can also spend more on lupus and fibromyalgia, can’t they? So why not? Supply and demand WORKS. And pray tell, if doctors are not going to be earning more money than anyone else, or are going to be taxed so heavily that they are just not allowed to make a profit, who is going to spend all that time and money to BECOME one? It’s like that ridiculous comment Obama made that capping salaries in an industry will draw MORE and BETTER people INTO that industry…WTF? Does that even make sense to anyone? So not only does progress stop, we give no one any incentive to dedicate their lives, and so much time and work, into even providing the service. Fewer doctors, not more.
Also, and I think I’m winding down here, the fact is that because supply and demand works so well, and because profits in fact do many good things for many people, for the common good, the market is self-adjusting, IF it’s left alone. So let me veer off into economics, though keep in mind that this applies to medicine just as it does to everything else. Because yes, it IS a business - the supplies, the service - that’s what it is. (People who think it isn’t, don’t bother telling me because I can not comprehend your thinking there; I think I’ve already illustrated why it is in fact a business, an industry.)
Let me compare this with breastfeeding for a moment because it’s a perfect analogy. When a baby is new it will nurse quite frequently, if he’s allowed to do so at will. The breasts, feeling the demand of the suckling by the infant, begin to produce a steady milk supply. If the baby goes through a growth spurt and requires more for a week or two, the breasts quickly adjust to the growing demand and produce even more. When the baby slows down and stops making the same demand on the breasts, in a day or two (though it’s a bit painful for that day or two) produce that much less. It adjusts quite naturally; and any nursing mom knows that if she wants to have some to save or to donate to a milk bank, she has to place additional demand on that breast by pumping when the baby isn’t eating. When the baby weans gradually, the milk dries up and you don’t produce it anymore. Another resource - solid food and other drinks - has taken its place, it isn’t being demanded anymore, so no more is made.
Basically, the body reacts like this: if a breast feels “full” for too long, it sends a signal to the factory that it’s making too much and tells it “too much - make less!” If a lactating breast is suckled and is consistently empty, it sends a message to the factory, “not enough - make more!” Aside: this is why I get so angry when people get bad nursing advice from ignorant doctors, though this is less common now. Basically, breast milk spends 1 1/2 hours in a new baby’s stomach to be processed - so at first you feel like you’re doing it constantly. But if the baby is allowed to continue to demand it, and everything is working properly, the breast will start to produce a much fuller supply; it all ends up being self-regulating. Yet I have witnessed famous pediatricians tell a new mother, whose baby was nursing every two hours (which is pretty good - it can be a lot more often, believe me) that she should cut it DOWN to once every three hours, because she should let the breast become “full” first so that the baby would have more there to drink. Um - if you have read this far, you know what that means, right? It means that her breasts, feeling “full”, would send a signal to her factory saying “too much - make less!” If she took his advice, I can guarantee you that woman was formula-feeding within weeks. If that. This is the whole problem with the practice of “scheduling” - it’s all right to schedule a baby who is drinking formula, to a degree. But if you distort this bodily process with a false schedule, your factory has no way of knowing how much to make and when - this is one reason why about 77% of mothers nurse for the first week or two and then stop - you can’t schedule, or regulate a self-regulating system. It is a *distortion* of the natural process of supply and demand. Now apply this reality to the market.
If there are 10 million prices and the people involved in each industry allow the demand to set the price, then adjust their production of each thing based on the demand for it (which is what happens when they are left alone to do it) then production of some things will go down and others will go up. How in bloody hell can a bureaucracy, from above, attempt to regulate such a system beyond the very obvious things like protecting people’s property rights? (That is, the right to make, own, earn and produce, along with the enforcement of contracts and the protection of them from bodily encroachment.) Every single distortion of this type screws with the natural, self-regulating process of the market. A bureaucracy can not POSSIBLY hope to try to direct the methods in which people ought to employ their capital or their production - it can only cause shortages in one place and overages in another place. We used to use whale oil in this country. When it became too expensive, people couldn’t afford it and it became obsolete, so we started with kerosene. This all happened without the government *telling* people to stop using it or making it - the prices did that. The supply and demand did that. This is why oil isn’t going to “run out” anytime soon - when it gets too expensive, as it did a year + ago, people stopped using so much of it. No one had to force them to do that - they started walking more when they didn’t need to drive, etc. Prices did what? They fell.
Anyway, whether it’s medicine or groceries or any product or service in the world, it’s not supply and demand that has caused problems - it’s distortions in supply and demand by *regulation*. I, for one, do not want to put my health care in the hands of a faceless bureaucracy that, for all its facelessness, can still put me in jail and use deadly force against me. It’s bad enough that so much of the money I work for is taken by this same faceless bureaucracy at the point of a gun - and yes, it is at the point of a gun - they put you in jail for not paying that money, don’t they? That’s force. It should only be used extremely sparingly and for the purposes of protecting people from harm and fraud. This is what the founding fathers fought and died for, and while I know we’re not going to get back there in my lifetime, I’ll be damned if I will allow it to KEEP going further and further in that direction without a fight. This giant isn’t sleeping.

Much like the oil industry, not a week passes that I don't see another project being delayed or canceled. Furthermore, the number of active drilling rigs has been in serious decline. The latest numbers from Baker Hughes Inc. reported that the number of exploration rigs has dropped nearly 45%. And if prices continue to remain this low, you can bet we'll see even more rigs going silent.
That means production is headed one waymuch lower.
Don't be surprised when you see a good number of changes in upcoming production forecasts. According to the EIA's latest Short Term Energy Outlook, U.S. production is projected to stay flat this year, followed by an 0.8% decline in 2010.
In other words, the supply glut created by those unconventional plays is going dry up when the economy picks back up. And when that happens, all of those delayed projects and cuts to spending will make supplies even tighter.
Now let's add liquefied natural gas on top of all that.
Most of my readers know that LNG isn't on the top of my list. The primary reason I've stayed away LNG investments was the attractiveness of our unconventional gas deposits. I was right on target, too. LNG imports to the U.S. dropped by 54% last year compared to 2007. And to be honest, my sentiment hasn't changed much.
However, I should note that any increases in LNG imports this summer to the U.S. will certainly push our supply crunch back and deteriorate prices further. I don't expect LNG imports to rise over 400 billion cubic feet this year.
The good news is that things will eventually get better for natural gas prices. Of course, the hard part is figuring out when.
Natural Gas Prices: What's Next?
The answer will likely depend on how long this economic turmoil lasts.
Most of the predictions that come across my desk pinpoint the latter half of 2009 as to when we'll pull ourselves out of this economic slump, with things improving even more in 2010.
That makes sense, especially considering the role natural gas plays in our industrial demand.
Until that economic recovery happens, there's not much pushing prices higher. Once that happens, the question will be focused on how much the market remains oversupplied and how soon that excess will dry up.
Investing in Natural Gas Today
It's hard not to stick with the winners.
Now, my regular readers know which natural gas stocks I've had my eye on throughout this market crash. Particularly, I tend to favor companies that are drilling in those prospective areas.
One of those plays I've discussed before was EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG). Even despite the production problems plaguing the oil and natural gas industry, EOG still expects to raise production by 3% this year.
As I've said before, these guys have dipped their hand in nearly every major area I've covered, including the Barnett, Haynesville and Marcellus shale plays (not to mention the Bakken play). Once our economic troubles pass, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about my readers making a fortune off some these types of plays.

If I may clarify, I believe Shays real question is: How do I find business builders?
Shay has come up with possible reasons for the lack of business builders sponsored into the team: Not talking to enough people, not talking to the right people and not connecting emotionally with people. My guess on the not connecting emotionally with people has to do with not inspiring someone (with words) to go after their dreams.
Alright, let me help all of you by sharing some MLM training tips that will answer Shays question.
Not talking to enough people and not talking to the right people is ALWAYS the network marketing industrys reason for everything. It might be in your case, I dont know as I dont know how many people you talk to. Ill give you the guide lines and you decide if youre talking to enough people.
In my MLM training I recommend a product called Pocket Tracker to measure your productivity. Using this product correctly, you should be scoring no less than 40 points per day as a part-time person and 100 per day as a full time person.
When you talk to people using the Inviting Formula below, which is a sequence to invite your prospect to look at either your business or product;
1. Greet
2. Qualify
3. Invite
4. Close to action
5. Handle questions/objections
6. Follow up/follow through
you will Qualify them in the 2nd step. In the qualify step youre finding out what the prospect needs/wants or doesnt want. A vital part of your MLM training is learning the ability to someone based on what you have discovered your prospect needs, wants or doesnt want.
For you to sponsor the people has to do with the qualifying step also. Its in this step that you determine if they qualify to do the business and if you want to help them - this is how you sponsor the right people.
Whether or not you build business builders or not (notice I didnt say business builders) has to do with how effective your MLM training is. When you say I havent sponsored 1 business builder, that leads me to think that you may be thinking these people are found instead of built. Im not saying you can make a business builder out of EVERYONE, but I am saying that business builders are built.
Through all the above I have basically - and on purpose - changed your question to something that is solvable.
How do you build a business builder?
1. Qualify people and make sure they have something they really want to achieve.
2. Sponsor them and immediately get them on Pocket Tracker to determine what they cant do well. This is explained in detail on the CD that comes with Pocket Tracker.
3. Work with them on THAT thing they cant do well, until they can do it well. Have them continue with Pocket Tracker until you locate the next thing they cant do well. Work with them on THAT until they can do that well also. Continue until they can do all the steps of Pocket Tracker.

Then again, if you are going to build up a home based business you could find that you are going to have to put in many hours of work to get it up and running, never mind actually returning a profit. Often one decides to work at home to get away from the rat race, and still want to earn the same income. This is possible but although you may get out of endless commuting by working at home, you should realise that you will still face other problems, and these need to be considered before you take yourself out of the workforce.
Managing work commitments at home and rear the children at the same time can take quite a lot of juggling of time and responsibilities. Then again, those who succeed at it, just love it!

Your own personal stamina.
Your level of personal drive to overcome adversities.
How much help you are going to get from your partner (if you have one).
Your level of desired income.
Will you mind working in your own company most of the time.
How many hours work will be needed to achieve the desired result.
Is there a market out there for the line of work that you are planning to do.
Will you be able to do the required work without any extra help like babysitting, or indeed, if you need it, can you afford it.
Have you researched to see if you can find suitable work in your area to suit your requirements.

There will be many social calls and personal phone calls because you are home and how are you going to manage these. As much as you love this contact, it can cut into your day quite dramatically and add extra pressure.
Do you need to purchase any equipment to work from home, and if so can you afford it.
Are there extra skills that you need to learn to be able to run your business.
If you do not have all the skills that are needed, and do not intend learning the particular skills yourself, have you got anyone in mind to do the work for you.
Will it matter to you financially, if the first venture fails.
Will it matter to you emotionally, if the first venture fails.
If you spend time at home working when the family are there, will anyone resent the fact that they do not have your attention.
Do you have the entrepreneurial skills to take the job into the future and not come to a stand still after the first month or two of excitement.
If you have considered the above situations and been happy with your answers, then you are fairly well on the right path to either work at home for someone else or, build up a small business from home.
The reality is that most problems can be overcome, but it is a matter of working through the problems as they arise. Face them head on as they appear and dont let them boil away underneath. There is nothing more destructive to a small business or project, than smouldering resentment or a massive argument, especially if you are at home on your own and have to deal with it.

I have been very careful about protecting my good credit history my whole life. I always pay my bills on time and keep my credit card balances well below their limits. I never bothered getting a copy of my credit report because frankly, I had done everything correctly and thought that I had nothing worry about. How wrong could I be!
My daughter moved out of home recently to move closer to her work. I agreed to put the lease of her apartment under my name because she had very limited credit history and my husband and I both felt that it would make it easier and quicker for her to secure a nice apartment. After a very short investigation we realized that someone had fraudently applied for credit cards using my social security number and identity. This was fast becoming a nightmare. I honestly though that credit identity theft was only something that happened in the movies. Our family accountant referred us to a credit repair service which did an amazing job of removing the incorrect details from my credit report.
I ordered another copy of my credit report just to be sure everything was OK and to my relief it was. We found another apartment and our application was successful.
From now on Ill be getting a free copy of my credit report every 6 months. I feel so stupid and naive for not checking it earlier. I was so lucky that we were declined for the initial apartment or we never would have known that there was someone out there destroying the credit score that I had worked so hard to build up and protect.
