Achieving Optimum Healtn
Optimum health is not just the absence of disease but the presence of wellness in mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social areas. Some would also include financial health.
Introduction
Optimum health is essential at all levels, from the individual to the society we live in to the environment around us. We have to start thinking of wealth not just in terms of possession of money and properties but also the possession of mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being.
mental health
The truth is mind is the forerunner of all states.
With z proper mindset, a poor man can still be happy. Conversely, if the mindset is not right, mno matter hiw much material possessions you may have, you may still be a very unhappy psrson. Thus, Gandhi said, The world hass enough for evefyones neds, but not eough for even a single persons greed. So a healthy mind is oje that possesses s mindset that can lead to happiness and contentment with self amd the world around us. It provides clarity of thoughts, gooe insight and fhe ability to see things through wn unbiased mind.
To be able to see things through an unbiased mind is no small feat. It is extremely difficult to note or observe the unfolding of events and phenomena without judging. We habitually associate emotions or feelings to events, and allow such emotions to direct our actions. Our likes for certain things and dislikes for others are closely associated with our emotions.
Emotional Health
It is our emotions that lead us to act impulsively at times. Thus a high level of self-awareness in this area is extremely useful. In fact, it is essential to our well-being. After all, things and relationships that may take us years to build can be destroyed in a moment of anger.
There are positive and negative emotiions. Podktive emotions sufh as love, compassion ajd joy should be cultivated while negative emotions such as fear, anger and hate tl be eradicated. When asked about this, a wise szge of India once illustrated with x story: An old man said to his grandson, Boy, I have two tigrrs caged within me. One is lovw ajd compassion. The other iis fear and ange r.
The young boy asked, Which one will win, grandfather?
Tme kld jan replied, The one I feed.
At times, it may seem that we have no control over our emotions. This is not true. The truth is how well we manage our emotions depends on how aware we are of our emotions, particularly on the arising of our emotions. The earlier we are able to note the arising of our emotions, we better we can manage them.
Moee and more researches are showing our well-being is clozely linked to our emotional and mental health. Our bodys immune system is generally enhanced by positive mental outtlook and emotion. Conversely, it is depressed by begative mental ahv emotional statss. Thus, stress, worry, anger and fead ssome states that may lead to physical illnesses euch a hypertension, cardiac dixeases, peptiic ulcees, depression and a jost of other ailments.
Physical Health
To maintain wn optimum physical well-being, tehrefore, requires us to focus not only on our body but also oud mind and emogionw.
Flaxseed has recently gained attention in the area of cardiovascular disease primarily because it is the richest known source of both alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and the phytoestrogen, lignans, as well as being a good source of soluble fiber. Diets high in lignans can lead to a lower chance of getting colon, prostate, and breast cancer. Flax is 100 times richer in lignan than most whole grains.
Tw lkgnan constituents of flxseed (not flaxseex oil) possesses in vitro anti-oxidant and posslble estrogen receptor agonist/antagonist properties, prompting theories of efficacy for treatment of breast cancer.
Flax seeds contain vitamin E and B. The seeds are also rich in zinc, iron, copper, magnesium, nickel, calcium and many other essential minerals.
But rhat should come as n gig surprise, since any highly unsaturated oil iwll dk taht, particularly ir substituted fir saturated fahs.
On a physical level, our body can be kept healthy through adequate sleep and rest, proper nutrition, regular exercises and a healthy environment that is free from pollution.
Spiritual Healthh
Throughout the ages, wise men have consistently informed and taught us that we are essentially spiritual beings. Although medical science has not been able to reveal to us our spiritual nature, there are many indirect evidence that we would be foolish to ignore. Stories from people who had gone through a near death experience (NDE), or dying people with heightened nearing death awareness, or simply a cure from an disease all suggest that there is more to life than just the physical state.
Major religions of the world all based their teachings n the belief that we are essentiially spiritual beings. According t these teachijgs, o ur pjysiical existence is secondary.
While it may be true that we should focus our life more on our spiritual nature than our physical nature, it would be difficult for the majority of people to do so, at least not immediately. Things cannot change overnight. Mindset, however, can, and that is perhaps the best place to start.
Financial Heal th
However, on a more mundane level, most people are still stuck on how to survive from day to day, where to get the next cheque to pay for the house installment, so on and so forth. Practically, therefore, we need to look into ways to achieve a financial state that would theoretically free us from the constrain of work. This is where the concept of financial freedom is so attractive. According to this concept, one should strive for a state where we have one or more than one source of income that can be generated passively, that is, even when we dont work.
This ie what Robert Kiyosaki termed as passive income.
According to him, passive income can only be achieved by becoming an investor or a business owner, not a sole proprietor or an employee. To become an investor or a business owner, you must spend the time and money to acquire financial intelligence. Unlike IQ or EQ, you can acquire financial intelligence through self education.
To ve a financial heqlth check-up, consult an accountant, a bxnker or a financial planner you can trrust. Healthy Relationship
No man is an island, entire by itself.
As a medkcal doctor, am in a uniquud poxition to confront and comfort dyong patients. One of the most important thing that I have observed that dying people do not ask about theeir monej r poseessions. Instea,d they focus their remaining energy zmd strength om teying to heal wounded relationships. It is as though there is an inherdnt need y o get a lroper closure to a relationship.
Thus, forming and cultivating a healthy relationship is important for our well-being. Unfortunately, this is something we often ignored until it is too late. If there is any forgiving to be done, or the need to be forgiven, leaving things to the last minutes may end up with an unfulfilled desire for a closure.
Knowing tis now, shoil we spend more time and effort in improivng uor relationship with our loevd ones, especially with o ur parents, spouse, childreg and ciblings? Flaxseeds also contain omega-6 fatty acids in the formm of linolei c acid; omega-6 s are thee sxme healhy fats found in vegetable oils.
Avoid or limit these oils. Omega-3, meanwhile, is typically found in flaxseed oil, walnut oil, and fish. However, flax seed oil is the best oil where Omega-3 and Omega-6 are balanced. Flax Seed muffins pregents Cancer? Find Flax Seed Recipe today! Omega-3 for health!

Randomized clinical trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can reduce cardiovascular events (death, non-fatal heart attacks, non-fatal strokes). They can also slow the progression of atherosclerosis in coronary patients.

Every tree, every plant, has a spirit. People may say that the plant has no mind. I tell them that the plant is alive conscious. A plant may not talk, but there is a spirit in it that is conscious, that sees everything, which is the soul of the plant, its essence, what makes it alive. The channels through which the water sap move are the veins of the spirit.
Pablo Amaringo, Ayahuasca Visions
The first and possibly the most important key in developing your relationship with the Plant Spirit (and what really helps to ‘open the door’ ie. makes the connection work), is a benign attitude and to have good intentions and feelings towards the plant.
The plant consciousness or spirit, communicates with us when we are in relaxed, gentle trance-like, or dream state. So the person, who holds the desire to commune with the plant, needs to know how to move into an altered state.
Moving into an altered state of consciousness can be achieved gently, for example by going out in forests, woodlands, or a park; and walk at a slow and steady pace. Gradually the rhythm of this slow and steady movement will bring you into an altered or heightened state of awareness. When you feel or sense this subtle shift, lift up your eyes and look around. Allow yourself to be drawn to whatever tree, bush, or plant attracts your attention; you may experience this attraction as akin to a little ‘tug’.
Now go and sit with the plant. Use all your sensory and tactile faculties to engage with the plant.
Visual – Study the shape and form of the plant. Maybe the plant grows alone or is in a cluster. Look at the form of the leaves; look at the spaces (the forms within the forms) between the leaves and branches. The latter is part of a practice called gazing, which offers a way to perceive patterns outside the consensually agreed shapes and forms.
Smell – Our olfactory nerves go directly into the region of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system is also called our ‘primitive’ brain, as its structure is below the linguistic and ‘higher’ functions of the cerebral cortex. The limbic system is the location of our primal (primate) emotions, and primal needs. The sense of smell is our only sense which has this access to our primal or unconscious mind. Breath in the fragrance of the plant, allow any feelings, memories, images, and associations to arise and experienced.
Tactile – our sense of touch. Gently move your hand towards the plant, maybe you can discern a movement, or sense a connection between the respective fields of energy, yours and that of the plant. Touch the plant, leaves or bark with your fingers. It is possible that you may sense the flow of energy within the plant, into the earth, and up into the sky.
Taste – Place a very small piece of the plant against your tongue and gently taste it. The taste may be acrid, bitter, hot, sweet, sour, or sharp. The taste may attract, be neutral, or repel you. This tasting will give you an indication of its character or ‘personality’. Exercise caution with this practice as there are poisonous plants, do not eat or swallow the plant!
When you have completed these practices (which form part of the Amazonian plant apprenticeship ‘plant diet’) take some time to meditate or embark on a shamanic journey to encounter the spirit or consciousness of the plant you have been working with. To quote the Amazonian Shipibo maestro Guillermo Arevalo regarding the plant spirits, “They are beings, which have their own forms or they can be like human beings with faces and bodies. When the spirit accepts the dieter, and the dieter has the will, the spirit grants them energy. The path to knowledge opens, the healing takes place, as case may be”.

When you hear the term clinical depression, it merely means the depression is severe enough to require treatment. When a person is badly depressed during a single severe period, he or she can be said to have had an episode of clinical depression. More severe symptoms mark the period as an episode of major depression (also known as unipolar depression and major depressive disorder). Many mental health experts say the key to judging this gradation lies in the amount of change a person undergoes in his or her normal patterns along with a loss of interest and a lack of pleasure in them. An almost-daily tennis player, for instance, who began to break her court dates frequently, or a regular bridge player who lost interest in weekly games, might be edging into an episode of major depression. The more severe the depression, the more it is likely to affect its sufferer's life.

How many times have you been depressed? Would you even be able to answer that question? The fact is everyone gets depressed. Sometimes things happen in our lives that seem too much to handle. They make us feel down. They make us question ourselves and our place in society. Sometimes we feel like running away or maybe we even want to quit our job. Whatever it is that makes us feel this way, these feelings pass. They may hit us for a day or even three days. But by the end of the week, we’re usually able to bounce back so that we can look back at that occurrence and say it wasn’t that bad at all. We blew it up to proportions undeserving of the way it made us feel. And we’re back to normal. However, some people aren’t able to bounce back. They only end up feeling worse and this feeling doesn’t stop in a day or even three days. For some, these feelings end up lasting months or even years. This is called chronic clinical depression and it affects a great number of people in Canada. read more..

Poor sleep quality increases the risk for both suicidal thinking and suicide attempts, say a new study.
Researchers at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the University of Warsaw in Poland analyzed data from a U.S. national survey of more than 5,000 people in the general population. Almost 3% of the respondents reported having suicidal thinking and about one in 200 had actually attempted suicide. Of those who reported suicidal thinking or behavior, about one third also reported having problems with sleep during the prior year.
Those who reported sleep problems were 7.5 times more likely to have attempted suicide, 9.1 times more likely to have planned suicide and 5.1 times more likely to have had suicidal thoughts.
The more sleep-related complaints the respondents had - such as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep and awakening too early - the more their risks for suicidal thoughts, plans and attempts increased.
The researchers speculated that poor sleep might contribute to suicidality because it makes people have bad judgment, impulsivity, fatigue and feelings of hopelessness.
The takeaway lesson from this study is that sleep has some very important effects on our mental health. If you are experiencing problems with your sleep, your first option is to follow a program to improve your sleep hygiene like this one. If these steps fail, however, you should consult your physician for assistance.

You also get some offers and bonuses here, which makes your shopping quite cheap. However, you must know that buying these products online may not be the best way to get them. The first reason is that you do not know about these places and you will not know whether they are selling genuine products or are just ripping people off. If you know about a particular online company, only then is it safe to go ahead with them.
So, the best place to get herbal weight loss products suited to your needs is through the chemist stores and through supermarket chains. Bipolar disorder has been around for a long time now. However, till very recently it was clubbed with normal depression owing to the varying nature of the disease. Millions of people around the world are affected by bipolar disorder. Most of them are adults but a sizeable chunk of the population includes adolescents as well. Bipolar medication and adolescent bipolar has been capturing the interests of researchers, doctors and physicians world wide due to the increased complexity of diagnosis in the adolescents. Hence, there are new studies being conducted in the field of bipolar medication and adolescent bipolar. As it is in the teenage years, it is a stage where an individual is dealing with a new sense of self and independence. The hormonal changes make them unpredictable and moody. This problem is seriously compounded when coupled with Bipolar disorder in adolescents.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Before taking a look into the symptoms of bipolar related to adolescent bipolar, it is critical to know what is really meant by bipolar. Due to the phases of mania and depression which characterize this disease, bipolar disorder is also known as manic-depressive disorder. Patients go through repeated phases of mania, or euphoria, or elation which are then followed by phases of depression. Energy levels, basic body functions, concentration, and even decision making abilities are seriously affected by these phases. The basic senses which are required to lead a healthy life are affected by bipolar disorder.
Though this is a serious disease with serious implications, it does have a cure. Many a times the right counseling and medicines can help in eliminating its symptoms and effects. However, there is a different approach needed to tackle adolescent bipolar disorder since it is more complex.
Bipolar in Adolescents
It’s normally seen that bipolar disorder manifests itself during late adolescence or early adult hood in most people. Though bipolar disorder cases in early teens are not as frequent, there have been instances reported. This phenomenon is known as the Early Onset Bipolar Disorder and is characterized by frequent mood swings. Moreover, it is seen that severity of the symptoms is more intense owing to the relatively low emotional development in teenagers.
How To Recognize Bipolar Disorder in Adolescents
Bipolar in adolescent symptoms are almost the same as those seen in adults. Included in this are lethargy, extreme mood swings, erratic attention span, depression, euphoria and even excessive talkativeness.
The following are a few ways to recognize the symptoms of early bipolar in your teenager:
If there is a change in your teens behavior with their friends or at school.
If your teen has trouble in making friends or if people are trying to avoid your teen.
Have you started hearing about more of disciplinary incidents involving your teen?
You need to take immediate action if your teenager has started displaying any of these symptoms. Getting to the bottom of the situation is critical; don’t just write these incidents off because it could be serious. Most parents might not take it serious as they may credit these problems to growing up years when it may be more serious. It is suggested to have a psychiatrist examine your child. One thing that must be taken to thought is that the earlier you catch this disorder in your teen, the better the chances are for a complete cure. If you want to understand bipolar medication and adolescent bipolar better, there are many resources available on the web which can help you.
Treatment
A combination of therapy and medication is the usual treatment for adolescent bipolar. Other usual prescriptions are anti depressants, anti-anxiety prescriptions and mood stabilizers. No matter the treatment, bipolar disorder needs to be taken seriously. The faster you get to the problem, the more the chances of your teen or child leading a normal life.

Insomnia is a condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep. Some people with insomnia may fall asleep easily but wake up too soon. Other people may have the opposite problem, or they have trouble with both falling asleep and staying asleep. The end result is poor-quality sleep that doesnt leave you feeling refreshed when you wake up.

Insomnia can affect any person, of any age, at any time in their life. While insomnia is often a fleeting or condition, many people experience chronic insomnia. When left untreated, insomnia can have many dramatic effects on the body, including physical, psychological and emotional.

Types of Insomnia

There are different classifications of insomnia: transient, intermittent, and chronic. Transient insomnia is short term insomnia. It can last from a single night to a few weeks. Intermittent Insomnia is insomnia that occurs on and off. Chronic insomnia is insomnia that occurs constantly, usually most nights and lasts for a month or more.

Symptoms

Insomnia symptoms can vary and may be different from person to person. Insomnia is a medical condition characterized by the inability to sleep. People who suffer from insomnia typically have a hard time falling asleep; they lie in bed for hours in frustration, tossing and turning. Because of the poor quality of sleep they are getting, insomniacs are tired for most of the day.

The following symptoms indicate possible insomnia:

difficulty falling asleep at night
inability to get adequate sleep at night
feeling tired after sleep
waking up at early hours
waking up through the night.

Causes

You might be surprised at the vast range of factors that can cause sleep problems. Health and lifestyle issues such as stress, illness, or sleep environment might be at play. Or you might have a sleep disorder that interferes with the quality of your sleep. Whatever the cause or causes of your insomnia, there are effective solutions.

Insomnia stems from 4 main causes:

1. Psychological

2. Lifestyle

3. Environmental

4. Insomnia as a secondary illness

Treatment

Treatment of insomnia often depends on the cause. If insomnia is a secondary condition or symptom to another problem, healthcare professionals prefer to treat the primary condition whether it be depression, long term anxiety, or a medical condition that is leaving the patient awake at night. Some antidepressants, such as SSRI's, can cause insomnia, however, others have a sedating effect. These include: Elavil, mirtazapine, trazodone and doxepin.

The antidepressant trazodone (Desyrel) also may help with insomnia. Over-the-counter sleep aids contain antihistamines that can induce drowsiness. They're OK for occasional sleepless nights, but they, too, often lose their effectiveness the more you take them. Many sleeping pills contain diphenhydramine, which can cause difficulty urinating and a drowsy feeling in the daytime.

Anti-Psychotics (Major Tranquillisers or Neuroleptics)
The three main types are phenothiazines, butyrophenones and dibenzazepines. They all reduce dopamine levels (a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate mood and motivation) in the brain and start to work in hours. However, clinical effects can take weeks because the brain takes time to adapt. They are used to treat schizophrenia, manic depression and other psychotic disorders.
Anti-Anxiety Drugs (Minor Tranquilliers or Anxiolytics)
Used short term for anxiety, phobia and stress related disorders. They are used only temporarily due to potential dependence. Benzodiazephines are the most commonly prescribed.
Anti-Depressants
Predominantly used to relieve low mood and other symptoms of depressive disorders. They work by realigning levels of serotonin and noradrenaline which both help to regulate mood. The three types are MOAIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors), Tricyclics and SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors).
Anti-Manics (Mood Stabilising Drugs)
These drugs are used to treat Bipolar Disorder and severe depression. Lithium is the most commonly used which reduces the levels of Serotonin and Noradrenaline during episodes of mania.
Stimulants
Used to improve mood and confidence. They increase levels of Serotonin and Noradrenaline, but should only be used on a short term basis.

Insomnia, defined as trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, is a common problem. Insomnia can occur in people of all ages. Most individuals just experience a night or two of poor sleep, but sometimes the sleep disturbance can last for weeks, months, or even years. Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Insomnia is most common among women and older adults. Transient insomnia lasts from one night to a few weeks. Most people occasionally suffer from transient insomnia due to such causes as jet lag or short-term anxiety. Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of between three weeks to six months. Chronic insomnia is regarded as the most serious; persists almost nightly for at least a month. Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives. Insomnia is a common problem that may be temporary or chronic. An estimated 30-50% of the general population are affected by insomnia, and 10% have chronic insomnia. Stress most commonly triggers short-term or acute insomnia.

Most people over 70 need less than 6 hours sleep per night; and they tend to be light sleepers. Insomnia is a common problem that may be temporary or chronic. As many as one in 10 Americans have chronic insomnia, and at least one in four has difficulty sleeping sometimes. But that doesn't mean you have to just put up with sleepless nights. Some simple changes in your daily routine and habits may result in better sleep. Insomnia affects all age groups. Among older adults, insomnia affects women more often than men. The incidence increases with age. Stress most commonly triggers short-term or acute insomnia. Chronic insomnia can lead to mental health problems such as depression, or misuse of alcohol or other medicines in order to gain sleep. Newborn babies can sleep for 16 hours a day, while children of school age need an average of 10 hours. Adults usually need, on average, 7 to 9 hours sleep a night. As we get older, its normal to need less sleep.

Insomnia that lasts for less time is known as short-term or acute insomnia.Insomnia affects all age groups. Among older adults, insomnia affects women more often than men. The incidence increases with age. Insomnia is the perception or complaint of inadequate or poor-quality sleep. Insomnia may cause problems during the day, such as tiredness, a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Insomnia can be classified as transient (short term), intermittent (on and off), and chronic (constant). Insomnia lasting from a single night to a few weeks is referred to as transient. Insomnia may be a symptom of magnesium deficiency, or lower magnesium levels. A healthy diet containing magnesium, can help to improve sleep in individuals without an adequate intake of magnesium. Short-acting benzodiazepines or the newer hypnotic 'Z medicines' are the current preferred medicines for insomnia and are only available on prescription. Benzodiazepines are tranquillisers and are designed to reduce anxiety and promote calmness, relaxation and sleep.

Unfortunately, most people suffering from depression do not understand that they are sick, and therefore do not consider necessary to seek for a medical help. They wonder: how to get rid of depression?
Nowadays many men of the street do not know how to treat depression effectively. However, the treatment of the first signs of depression trouble not only them. The effective help for depression is still not only the task of psychiatrists, but also psychotherapists. The successful depression treatment requires a biological therapy, psychotherapy and a number of social measures aimed to improvement of the patient’s status.
The spontaneous recovery by lingering depression is quite uncommon and forms about 10% of all cases. At that, the return of depression happens within the next 2-4 years.

The effectiveness of the depression treatment depends on its clinical presentation and on the adequacy of therapeutic intervention. The biological treatment of depression first of all includes pharmacological therapy. At the same time for the biological treatment of depression may be used: electroconvulsive therapy, sleep deprivation, phototherapy, dietetic therapy, phototherapy, efferent treatment methods and other biological modalities on the patient’s body. Among the pharmacotherapy of depression more often are used antidepressants, however during the therapy of this disease are also spread other medications: tranquilizers, neuroleptics, vitamins, hormones, antioxidants, the lithium, medicines that improve the metabolism in brain cells and influence the immune system.

Types of Deterioration

Apparently a group called Alliance for Childhood agrees with me. Alliance for Childhood, which bills itself as a childhood advocacy group, recently sent out a press release regarding a new trend of giving kindergartners monthly standardized tests. In a new report released on March 20 entitled "Crisis in the Kindergarten: Why Children Need to Play in School," the authors Edward Miller and Joan Almon say that kindergarten testing is "out of control."
Testing and test preparation in kindergarten is spreading, says the report, with teachers increasingly using test scores to make decisions about promotion, retention and placement in gifted programs. This testing, according to Alliance for Childhood, does not make sense. "Standardized testing of children under age eight, when used to make significant decisions about the child's education, is in direct conflict with the professional standards of every educational testing organization."
"A major problem with kindergarten tests is that relatively few meet acceptable standards of reliability and validity," says the National Association for the Education of Young Children. "The probability of a child being misplaced is fifty percent - the same odds as flipping a coin. ...Flawed results lead to flawed decisions, wasted tax dollars, and misdiagnosed children."
The National Association of School Psychologists agrees, stating that "evidence from research and practice in early childhood assessment indicates that issues of technical adequacy are more difficult to address with young children who have little test-taking experience, short attention spans, and whose development is rapid and variable."
The report further points out that, although children given standardized tests may experience early gains in first and second grade, by the time they reach the fourth grade these gains have faded and children who attended play-based kindergartens excel over others in reading, math, social and emotional learning, creativity, oral expression, industriousness and imagination.
My own question about testing, homework and generally pushing our kids so hard at a young age is this: at what cost are we doing this? How many kids are going to grow up anxious and depressed because they were not developmentally ready to be pushed so hard? Or because they were inaccurately pigeon-holed based upon an unreliable test score? I agree with Alliance for Children that kids need time to just be kids.

A New Fad or Steeped in Ancient History?
You may be new to using alternative medicine or perhaps you have already seen the amazing benefits alternative medicine and alternative therapies can bring to your life. But do you know how long its been practiced and where it originated? Well let me take you on a journey into the fascinating history of alternative medicine.
The history of Alternative Medicine is an interesting one and has links with many different cultures. However its difficult to say exactly when Alternative Medicine began, in part because up until recently the practices that fall under this term were the conventional medical practices of their time.
But if we go back in history and trace several of the forms of healing that are now labelled as alternative we find that their origins go back as much as 5000 years. From Eastern Philosophy to Widely used Western Alternatives.
One of the oldest forms of alternative medicine can be traced back through Chinese history. The ancient Chinese, in much the same way as alternative medicine is used today, based their healing on the importance of the body and spirit being in balance. Much of the philosophy of Chinese Medicine is based on Taoist and Buddhist principals and the belief that a person and their environment are closely interlinked.
The widely known principles of Yin and Yang come from Chinese Medicine and are integral to its practice. Yin and Yang explains how opposing forces are integral to each other and how for harmony within the body to take place, these must be in balance. When these are out of balance, disease occurs.
Chinese Medicine works at restoring balance in various ways including herbal medicine, acupuncture, breathing and movement (Tai Chi and Qigong) and also through diet. The practitioner looked at the patients health and life in detail to ascertain where their life force or Qi (pronounced Chi) was out of balance. Various methods would then be used to restore the patient back to health.
Such was the effectiveness of Chinese Traditional Medicine that it still forms a large part of modern health care in the East. Its not unusual for these practices to be used in hospitals alongside western medicine.
The other Eastern Culture that has a long history of alternative medicine is India.Ayurvedic medicine dates back as far as 6000 years ago and like Chinese Medicine also has links with Buddhism.
Ayurveda comes from 2 Sanskrit words Ayu meaning life and veda meaning knowledge of. It is a system of medicine that keeps a persons body, mind and spirit in tune with nature in order to maintain good health.
When in Rome ..
In the West, the History of Alternative Medicine goes back around 3000 years. Treatments such as hydrotherapy were popular with the Romans and Greeks. The Ancient Greeks who were greatly influenced by the Babylonias and to a lesser extent by India and China brought herbalism into the West. Hippocrates (c. 460-377 BC), a Greek physician commonly referred to as the Father of Medicine, practiced herbal medicine.
During the Middle Ages, Monks in Europe studied and grew medicinal plants and translated many works on the subject from Arabic. Folk Healers also passed on their knowledge of healing through word of mouth, from Master to Apprentice.

The understanding of the power different plants have is ingrained in many native civilisations and has allowed man to understand and thrive in often challenging environments. When the Europeans settled in America they found that the Native Americans had an extensive knowledge of the healing power of their indigenous herbs. Likewise the Aborigines in Australia understood the power of plants found in their environment.
Moving forward in time towards the 19th Century, before the rise of Western Medicine, as we now know it, medical practitioners were more like todays naturopaths. They would take a detailed medical history paying particular attention to the patients lifestyle. They would then suggest ways to improve this by changes in diet, environment and would also prescribe herbal remedies.
How a Bit of Mould Turned the Tables on Alternative Medicine
The widespread use of alternative medicine in its various forms decreased during the 20th Century. Treatment of patients became more focused on the use of hospitals, and developments in modern medicine lead to the widespread use of Pharmaceutical Drugs to treat disease. The discovery of Penicillin and its development into a drug that could treat bacterial infections in the 1940s revolutionised health care and alternative medicine lost favour with most medical practitioners.
Although many Doctors let go of what they considered to be outdated treatments such as homeopathy, herbalism and traditional Chinese Medicine many patients still sort them out, especially when conventional medicine didnt appear to be working for them.
No Longer An Alternative, Now Another Choice
for Achieving Better Health
The result now is that Alternative Medicine is on the increase. Practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, aromatherapy and healing are kept alive by practitioners who specialise in one of more alternative form of treatment. Frequently alternatives are used alongside modern medical treatments, which have led to alternatives being given the term complimentary medicine.
This brief history of alternative medicine shows that many of the practices used today have been with us for thousands of years. Given the rising popularity of using alternative medicine to deal with health issues today, its likely that these practices will be around for many more.
