“Shaikh Ibraaheem Al-Hilaalee Al-Halabee – a pious and noble scholar – traveled to Al-Azhar University in search of knowledge. While seeking knowledge, he became very poor and used to rely on charity. One time, several days passed by and he did not find anything to eat, so he became extremely hungry.
So he came out of his room in Al-Azhar to ask for some scraps of food. He found an open door from which a pleasant smell of food was coming out of. So he entered the door and found himself in a kitchen with no one around. There he found some tempting food, so he grabbed a spoon and dipped it in, but when he lifted it to his mouth, he held himself back from eating it, since he realized that he had not been given permission to eat from it. So he left it and returned to his room in the dormitory of Al-Azhar, still hungry and starving.
But no less than an hour passed by, when one of his teachers, accompanied by another man, came into his room. And his teacher said to him: ‘This noble man came to me seeking a righteous student of knowledge to choose for marrying his daughter, and I have chosen you for him. So rise and come with us to his home where we can complete the marriage contract between you and his daughter and you can become part of his household.’ So Shaikh Ibraaheem struggled to get to his feet, obeying the command of his teacher and went with them. And behold they took him to the very same house he had been to, and which he had entered and dipped the spoon into the food!
So when he sat down, the girl’s father married her to him and the food was brought out. It was the same food he had put the spoon into before and which he abandoned. But now he ate from it and said to himself: ‘I withheld from eating it when I had no permission, but now Allaah has given me this food with permission.’
Afterward, this righteous wife went back with him to Halab, after he had finished his studies. And she bore righteous children for him.”
So this is the fruit of patience and this is the result of having taqwaa, as Allaah says: “And whoever has Taqwaa of Allaah, He will make a way out for him (from hardship), and He will provide for Him from places He never imagined.” [Surah At-Talaaq: 2-3]
But as for those who are hasty – those who do not distinguish between the truth and falsehood, seeking after the transitory vanities of this worldly life – they will never experience anything but grief and sorrow in their hearts, for they will never attain the worldly life nor will they ever achieve Religion.
This is because they forget – or perhaps neglect – the saying of Allaah: “Is not Allaah sufficient for His servant?” [Surah Az-Zumar: 36]
As for those who are patient and firm and who have Taqwaa, they will gain ascendancy in this life and glory and honor with their Lord on the Day of Judgement. And Allaah says: “So give the glad tidings to the patient ones.” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 155] And He says: “Verily, the patient ones will be given their reward without any reckoning.” [Surah Az-Zumar: 10]

This idea of regifting has been eating at me for months now, ever since a discussion with a parent at the kid's preschool about how, between family, church, work, neighbors and school, it seems like there's at least one but sometimes two kid birthday parties every weekend. And it's enough to make me want to stock a closet full of Playmobil, because it'd be easier than running to the store for every party.
And from there, we talked about book exchange parties, where kids were invited to bring two books they liked, and they'd trade them. And from there it was apparently a slippery enough slope for this parent to cop to regifting pretty frequently.
At which point I joked how I'm the clueless guy who keeps the system churning by inadvertently buying new, easily regiftable gifts. And they're all, you have no idea. And that actually, at their kid's party, they figured that a full 40% of their kid's haul--10 of 25 presents--were regifts. And none of this regifting is driven by a lack of means. Instead, it's--what? A lack of interest in shopping? A lack of interest in accumulating stuff, stuff and more stuff? Practicality? Convenience? An urge to declutter? Environmental awareness?
Some of these gifts were straight up, hot potato pass-alongs. One book, this parent said, even had an inscription to the giver for his birthday--which had just happened. And all three--the original giver, the regifter, and the regiftee, were all at both parties.
While there were a couple of unopened regifts--I didn't think to ask how they knew they were regifts--others were in opened or retaped original packages, different packaging, or even no packaging at all, just giftwrapping.
And that's when it occurred to me that maybe I was looking at regifting way too narrowly, as a way to manage down the social convention of gift giving. And that's fine. Your kid gets yet more toys they don't need, or gets duplicates, it seems like no big deal to be grateful--and then to pass them along when you think there's a better chance of their being used and loved.
But the real power of regifting might lie in teaching a kid to not only think of her friend, and give something her friend would like, but also to give something of her own to her friend. It could make the gift--and the gift process--more meaningful than, "Here's something my dad picked up for you at the toy store."
Obviously, that this kind of gifting is only regifting if the gift was originally a gift. But that's a technicality. What's important is the giving-without-shopping, the giving up. But what it also would entail is letting the recipient know that the kid's giving something of her own, and that you're not just offloading some used toy.
Which all sounds great in theory, but even almost six months and many parties after the discussion, I still haven't tried it out yet. Any thoughts.

Regarding Babylon, one message in the book of Revelation is not “Come out of her, you Pagans.” The message is: “Come out of her, my people” (Revelation 18:4). The message would not be appropriate unless God’s people had a presence in Babylon at the time of the end. Why should you come out of Babylon?
“…That you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues” (same verse).
“…her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities” (Revelation 18:5).
Babylon has been a golden cup in the Eternal’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad (Jeremiah 51:7).
While the City of Babylon will be a specific place on this planet, Babylon itself is a system that girdles the globe. It is the international control system in opposition to God. It was set up like that from the beginning when Nimrod established Babel, the seed that became Babylon.
“…Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD” (Genesis 10:9).
The King James “before” is from the Hebrew word “paniym”, which means, among other things, “in front of.” Nimrod placed himself in front of God, ahead of God, in essence, against God. And, Nimrod’s system, Babylon, as refined by his wife, Semiramis, became the control system opposed to the Creator God.
To understand Babylon, we must understand Babel, the tower upon which the system was founded. It was more than just a tower; it was the beginning of the control system against God. It has evolved into being the control system we see in todays modern world: control of religion (faith control), control of media (opinion control), control of education (mind control), control of commerce (trade control), control of banking (money control), control of medications and prescriptions and medical services (drug control).
How did Babylon get started? Before there was Babylon, there was Babel. After the flood, God gave a promise that he would not destroy all flesh in a flood (Genesis 9:13-15). However, many of the people were still fearful. Nimrod took advantage of this fear. Josephus describes what happened after the flood. At first many were reluctant to come down from the mountains, fearing a future worldwide flood. This occurred in spite of a direct promise from God. When the majority of people did come down from the mountains, they dwelt in the plane of Shinar, a section of territory that would comprise what was later known as a precinct of Babylon. It was a good land for farming and was filled with blessings from the ground. However a leadership arose that rejected the idea that the prosperity was a blessing from God. They believed that their own power was the proper cause of their plentiful conditions and that they were therefore under no obligation to obey God.
It was Nimrod, grandson of Ham, who incited them to exhibit such an affront and contempt of God. His philosophy was, “If you submit to God, you are a coward.” It was a philosophy of expanding self-confidence into self-worship. The building of the tower of Babel was supervised by the master mason, Nimrod. Its purpose was not simply to reach into heaven (the sky). Its purpose was also to provide a place to go when the future flood arrived to drown the world. Nimrod worked on the fear people had of the flood, a flood that never came. Fear was (and is) a tool of Babylon.
The tower was constructed of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar consisting of bitumen, which made it water-proof. Fearful that other places might not be as fruitful and plentiful as Shinar, the majority of the people participated in the building of the tower. Nimrod controlled the people by the tool of fear. However, the tower-building project came to an abrupt end when God confounded their language and scattered them over the face of the earth (Genesis 11:7-9). So all the people who were participating in the building of the tower became unable to communicate with each other and, as a result, became scattered. After this time, did anyone come to inhabit the land of Shinar? Yes. Hestiaeus mentions the priests of Jupiter (a false god) took sacred vessels and came to Shinar.
Nimrod’s great uncle, Shem, is also known as Sem. He is the father of all the Semitic people. According to profane history Shem killed Nimrod, cut him up, and sent pieces of his body all over the inhabited world.
This violent act had the effect of terrorizing Semiramis, Nimrod’s widow, to the extent that she transformed the Babel system into a mystery, a secret system known only to the inner circle. It became the Babylonian mysteries. And today Babylon is a mystery to the majority of the world’s population who have been victimized by it. Modern education and media are, for the most part, Godless and secular.
“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient” (Romans 1:28).
This is the reason so many in the media and in education have lost the ability to maintain logical and reasonable trains of thought. Their degeneracy has developed to the point in which their mind has become reprobate. Some newcomers have not reached that point but they are told they must get with the program or get out. After years of getting with the program, they, too, lose the associative abilities one would ordinarily expect of reporters and educators.
Christ did not institute vows of poverty for himself or for anyone else. On the other hand he did not direct that his way (Christianity) should be run like a business, complete with territorial imperatives, spirit of competition, and an overbearing chain-of-command to lord it over the so-called “laity”.
Many demons have had the effect of placing an extra level of deception into the mind of the idolater. For example, at the end there will be frog-like demons that will influence the rulers of the earth to believe that they can actually fight against Christ (Revelation 16:13-14). There is an equation at work here. The more idolatry a person is involved in, the greater capacity they have for self-deception.

At first, this may seem like someone simply going after other gods and using idols as an aid to worship other gods. The next verse makes it clearer. You shall not apply this to the true God!
